Sept. 17, 2007 The televised hearing on the Petraeus report has me wondering if I am actually awake or am I just dreaming? Does the government of the most powerful country in the world, the one by which we are all affected no matter where we actually reside, actually operate in this way? It was embarrassing to watch the likes of Barbara Boxer castigating the top US commander as she herself seems to know nothing of international politics or things military. There was no mention of tactics, strategy, operations, projected outcomes, only public relations quotes from past interviews; the implication being that things planned in the past should pan out as projected; all delivered in a voice modulated in such a way as if trained for a political campaign commercial. It was sickening! It would be senseless to go into each question as each was prewritten and designed to appeal to those who believe the Hollywood line. The General did well in confining himself to his area of expertise and not letting himself be drawn in to looking ridicules by playing the liberal Hollywood game of imaging that we are all living in a fairly tale land just about cleansed of war, hunger, poverty etc but for the machinations of those capitalistic Republicans. True some Americans have always lived in a kind of Hollywood dreamland and we have learned over the years to make allowances for them. Now I am beginning to wonder if the long indoctrination by Hollywood is now actually taking effect on the US public. One could argue that the tentacles of Holly wood stretch all over the world and it is not just the US that is affected; to which I would counter that the language of Hollywood is English and those not living in the US will immediately equate it with American fairly tales. Well how about the fact that most of the world speaks English? Ah but they speak English without an American accent causing the soundtrack to come across as something foreign and having no place in their everyday lives. Only in the realm of fantasy and escapism does Hollywood become a factor. Not having lived in North America all of my life I do not know if in the past Americans, as the plot became more ridicules, sneered, hooted and laughed while watching a movie. In my part of the world, which at times stretched pretty far, it was all part of the experience. Of course there were a very few exceptions to conducting oneself in this manner; such as when films such as ‘Gone with the Wind’ etc were playing, but in general we watched just for a laugh, even if the movie was supposed to be serious. The baby boomers seemed to have had a different view regarding the significence of the movies ; the utterances of ‘ the Ladies and Gentlemen of Hollywood’ now met with a reverent silence or a ‘right on man ‘(unlike their children who yak and laugh on their cell phones and when asked to be quite look at you as though you are crazy). It is to the baby boomers to whom Boxer is playing
Where will it end? Obviously no system can continue
to operate at such a childish level. All civilizations
have something inherent within themselves, which cause
there down fall, no matter how much they deny it .Is
Hollywood America's Achilles heel?
