Being Free

By Skip Toomaloo

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” John 8:36

I am free.

I received Jesus as my Lord and savior in 1975. I was a young man of 22 years at the time having completed those first years of my existence in an unjustifiable state of sin.

During those years in the wilderness of lost hope I was under the belief that I was safe from the ravages of hell, being protected by a trust in a church that practiced a religion that promised me heaven based on being good and never harming another person.

I believed I was a good person since I did not practice harm on anyone, obeyed the rules of my parents and helped others when I saw their need of assistance.

I was happy.

Yet all through those years before I became secured in eternal relationship with God I questioned the religions I became acquainted with. They all seemed sincere enough in seeking the same goal of heaven, but there were too may different methods among the religions I studied, each purporting to be the only true way to spirituality.

This confusion of methods drove me away from religion altogether. I left all such religious organizations at the age of 14. I was basically “churchless” for the following 8 years.

The Lord was patient with me. He allowed me to make my mistakes and run into my walls. He permitted me to become despondent to the point I began seeking again.

Jesus said “Seek and you will find…” and eventually, with the help of others who knew the personal God, I was directed into the pages of the Hebrew/Christian Bible. It was there that I read “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him and without him nothing was made that was made. In him was life…..and the Word became flesh, and we beheld his glory as the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

I came to find those words true and right. I sought and found the Messiah. I have been free from my guilt, my shame and my pride since that moment I opened the door of my heart to him, asking for forgiveness and salvation.

Jesus said: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” And he could have spoken no greater truth. I am free.

I am free to follow my God and my Lord in a path that is, at some times rough, but at most a time is refreshing and enjoyable. Faith has given my work meaning and worth. I love what I do when interacting with others. I can openly share my love for Jesus without shame, disregarding the criticisms that arise from those who still do not understand the meaning of what has been accomplished by God in me.

Jesus has given me a heart toward others. I do not judge and there is never a need to debate. God does not need any particular defense from me. He exists. That is truth. He saves souls from eternal death. He opens himself to every man and he accepts every man who receives the free gift of faith he offers, repenting of the sin he is entrapped by.

I am free, holding no malice toward others, expecting no special favor. My only real desire is that others will see the truth displayed by the invisible God and receive his gifts in trust. This is the message I will always strive to convey.

The Son has set me free. I am free indeed.
