The Reality Of Animal Slaughter: Michael Vick

By Nicholas Olson
Sept. 10, 2007

Logic and reason, the reality of the world we live in, has been put on display. Like it or not, we, the hypocrites of the world, like pointing fingers at the "evil doers" in our society, all the while supporting the exact same thing everyday. The majority have spoken and they are dead wrong.

Michael Vick, star of the gridiron, is a prime example of the American entrepreneur who has been misjudged, not because he is not guilty of atrocities against another species, but because his hobby is not condoned by the rest of American society.

The value of life in question, those of the animals being genetically altered and raised for the sport of fighting to the death, has a similar cousin, only it is the one we most except.

Everyday, all over the world, farmers and factories raise animals for the sole intention of slaughter for consumption. Chickens, pigs, cows and fish are just some of the creatures we care for only long enough for them to fatten up to be taken to a building to be processed. Can't the same be said for fighting animals?

Whether it a bull in Spain, a dog in Southeast Asia or a rooster in South America, animals that should be respected as those that share our planet are born, bred and slaughtered for our entertainment. Nothing is different, just not as acceptable.

Take it not that I condone the behavior, but where is it said, by the collective consciousness of society, that, morally, we can be hypocritical to suit our whims?

While Michael Vick is preparing to meet his sentencing, he is no different, in all reality, than a cattle rancher. If he was raising cows to fight each other, and they did, would he be given immunity? Is it right for us to judge him based on the fact that he was part of creating a contained sport where the sole purpose of the life of these dogs was to fight each other?

Go to a cattle ranch and look out at the herd. They are walking, eating and spewing creatures that aren't like those in a kids cartoon. They are big, dumb animals with one sole purpose. We do what we please with them because it is acceptable to put them on a patty or use their milk to accompany our food.

Here I will stand, holding a mirror up to our faces and ask, where do we get the nerve? Are we too busy to think before we act?

Michael Vick is a jerk and will be punished. But so should we all. Ignorance is no excuse.
