Oct. 24, 2007 Before I begin this essay I want to make it clear that I'm showing how similar Rush Limbaugh's propaganda techniques are compared to those of Joseph Goebbels, and I'm not equating him with the atrocities committed by the Nazis, though he is on the same side of the political spectrum. Limbaugh puts fifteen hours of lies and distortions out every week, so I'll narrow my analysis down to what was on his official website on October 22, 2007. Prominently displayed was a flaming picture of a young Rob Reiner standing next to Hillary Clinton, captioned with the words, "Meathead collects donations for Hillary's campaign while Malibu burns." Limbaugh might have a valid point if republicans stopped campaigning and put a moratorium on collecting contributions because of the fire, but, of course, they didn't. Despite the grade school absurdity of the caption, I clicked on it and read a partial transcript of the discussion. He criticized environmentalists for not being on the front lines, battling the fire. He's wrong about this--I'm sure there are many fire fighters who are pro-environment. Nevertheless, I don't see any lumber company executives battling the fire nor any radio talk show hosts. He then fielded a caller who blamed the Sierra Club for the forest fires. The fires in California are brush fires and have nothing to do with forest fires in other parts of the Rocky Mountains. Most scientists, if not on the payroll of lumber companies, agree the forest fires there are the result of lumber companies' fire suppression policies, but the California fires are an unpreventable act of nature. I can only imagine the hateful mindset of Rush Limbaugh's audience. They hate Hillary Clinton, they hate environmentalists; and when Limbaugh combines the two, he's feeding an irrational frenzy of anger. Joseph Goebbels did the same thing. The Germans hated that they lost World War I, they hated the Jews; and when Goebbels blamed the Jews for Germany's loss, he fed that irrational anger. Logically, one has nothing to do with the other, but the right wing has difficulty deciphering the truth. I shouldn't have to waste time explaining that environmentalists didn't cause the massive fires in California and Hillary Clinton isn't celebrating this tragic event. But Limbaugh caters to the stupid gullibility of his audience who will believe any conservative talking point no matter how ridiculous (such as Iran might launch missiles at Europe).
