Putin And His Nuclear Weapons

By Amanda Baker
Oct. 22, 2007

I grew up in the dark ages, i.e. the cold war. It was a time when the USA feared the USSR and their nuclear weapons. As far as I know, those weapons still exist in the current country called Russia.

President Putin this week went to talk to the Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The summit has been reported on in the news, and how it is important that Russia support the anti-nuclear weapon development that the United Nations and that the USA support. Iran needs the sanctions to stop developing enriched uranium.

Okay, now here is my simple question:

If Russia and Iran are talking, what is to stop President Putin from just giving Iran the nuclear weapons?

I am not a high government official, nor am I a reporter who can gather the information above but it seems sad to me that our national media is not asking this important question.

Nations have to be diplomatic. Ours has been in the past and is currently trying to regain diplomatic footing after some bad national choices. Our president today spoke in a press conference, he stated, “I will wait for Putin to clarify his statements about Iran’s nuclear program.” I hope the president will get back to the American public with that information.

The nuclear weapon development in Iran is not a concern that I have, and I know most people only have the concern when it is reported in the news. But the fact that our cold war nemesis still has those weapons, and can still use them that does bother me. Russia has a developing economy. It needs the trade with Iran. At what cost to security?

President Bush needs to address this. That is all I have on this subject.
