Nov. 28, 2007 “But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you… Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.” Luke 6:27-28 These are the words of Jesus. They must be the words of the Lord. The Lord is right and righteous in what he says. Jesus, being God cannot be wrong in his acts or his words. The hardest thing for a Christian to do is exhibit love toward an enemy. It should never be the Christian who develops the emotions that would lead to strife against any individual. It is enough to understand that a true Christian is automatically the enemy of the world and the inhabitants of the world. As the world hates Jesus, so it hates all the followers of the Lord High God. Yet, Jesus is the great example. Greater love has no man than the man who would lay down his life for his friends. Jesus laid down his life for a world that had no life or hope or light of faith. He gave himself a sacrifice for men. Jesus showed the love one must have for an enemy. Jesus did nothing but good among sinners. He sat with them in their homes and ate with them while speaking the truths of the kingdom in his effort to change hearts toward his Father and away from sin. The Pharisees hated this man who proved them shallow representatives of the true God. The Pharisees and the Sadducees were men hiding inside man-made laws camouflaged as God-spoken mandates for righteousness. Jesus proved the fallacy of religion through his exhibition of absolute faith. Jesus pronounced blessings on people the Pharisees only held in contempt. How dare Jesus heal people and feed people the Pharisees ignored because of their poverty or the diseases they believed incurable? Then Jesus using his last breaths; praying for those who were tormenting him asking his Father’s forgiveness because of their ignorance. It seems no matter the circumstance Jesus was capable and ready to display love. His words were delivered with grace and peace. Did Jesus display anger? Yes, we know he did this too in an effort to make heartless thieves see the error of using the House of God for personal profit-making. Men are supposed to know right from wrong. Men are never to bring evil against the name of the True God of Heaven. Jesus accepted the hatred of men as a natural outgrowth against his message. One cannot much force unnatural things against the natural. The nature of man is to reject and despise God. The unnatural thing is to expect the Gospel of Christ to affect every heart of man toward faith in the True God. Jesus knew he would be killed by the very people he loved and wanted to save. Christians are no less despised by today’s world. The Gospel is a hated document which speaks only of the love of God. A true irony indeed! A Christian in today’s world must be a man of peace. Prayer is that means of peace to the soul. Jesus was able to ignore the insults and the mocking of the superior-religious clergy of his day because of his unbroken communion with his Father. Today’s Christian has those same resources to draw from. Communion with the God-head is not something foreign. It is something real. It is standing in one’s strong faith that God is true to his blessings and promises that one can find the grace to display love toward enemies. Being true to the mandate to spread the message of Christ to the world is the right path to spiritual fulfillment. We bless those that would curse us because Jesus would ask nothing less. We pray for those who would condemn us because they bring greater destruction upon themselves. We, like God would see none perish through their ignorance. In every instance we find ways to do good to those who recommend only evil against us. These are the words and the acts of the Lord who has adopted us to his family in faith. Stay faithful Christian.
