May 26, 2007 Much has been spoken lately about the status of our current immigration legislation. Many feel it is a broken system that badly needs to be amended. It was amended in 1986. At that time we saw an up-tick in immigrants to the tune of 3 million. The latest tallies of what can be expected if this newest legislation comes to fruition is about 12 million or more immigrants will be granted legal status immediately while those who have carefully waited and done the right thing are still not legally American. In a country that touts freedom and justice for all does this seem fair? Why would we reward people for breaking our laws? What part of illegal does this congress and administration not get? I do not dispute that this country was founded on immigrants. Immigrants have made our society multifaceted, multidimensional, and enriched our lives. What I do dispute is how these immigrants may obtain legal status. What does it speak to the rest of the world if we change our current immigration laws to embrace and reward these people who have previously come here as temporary workers, etc. and not left? Does this reform not leave the door wide open for more people to come to America illegally and be granted the highest honor of all, citizenship? We currently have a process for people seeking to become American citizens. As I understand that process we should not amend those laws, but enforce or apply our current laws while also seeking to upgrade our system across the board. That said, this new legislation makes no sense to me and appears to be a big waste of time, money, and effort. I would assume that we might need to hire more staff to make this process more expedient or seamless, and even upgrade our technology to ensure a smoother and faster transition time, but to redo the entire system to benefit those that had ample opportunity to come clean is borderline insane! This new immigration legislation makes provisions for some processes that have been lacking in our old legislation. However, an in-depth look at those proposed processes or provisions from a time and energy perspective proves that they are absolutely inadequate. Case in point, this new legislation provides a 24 hour time frame to screen backgrounds and perform fingerprint checks for these persons seeking citizenship in the United States. If nothing turns up in that 24 hour time frame citizenship is automatically granted and social security cards are generated for those persons. This new legislation is not only irresponsible and inadequate, but needs to be stopped before it goes any further. What American's lawmakers need to do is enforce the laws we now have on the books in addition to securing our ports, borders, railways, and air terminals to help prevent another 9/11. American immigration workers need to go to where those illegal people work or reside, give them a choice-become legal or leave. Those wishing to stay would be fingerprinted and documented, then processed as all other immigrants are. If background screening and fingerprint checks come back clean they are good to go. If background checks come back with issues or circumstances that require more digging these persons are held/detained or sent back home until they are cleared. While these persons wait for legal status they should not be eligible for any services that American citizens are afforded including healthcare and education unless they can pay for that at the time services are rendered, no exceptions. Parents who purposefully and illegally come to America to have their children will not be granted carte blanche citizenship for their illegal children, but must be required to work the process to its legal end without exceptions. America's lawmakers need to get tougher by hitting the persons or companies that hire these illegal workers in their pocketbooks. Legislation needs to be metered out and levied by setting hefty fines and/or jail terms for those organizations that continue to work outside of the laws set forth for citizens of the United States with regard to hiring illegal persons. If you, like me, are fed up with our do nothing congress and their amnesty for illegal workers then the time to act is NOW. Please call or write your local, state, and county representatives and congress people telling them that we need to secure our ports, borders, railways, and air terminals before we can even consider changing our immigration legislation. That to leave those areas open is to be remiss in upholding their responsibilities to keep America safe. ------------ About the author: Michelle Malsbury holds a BSBM and MM in Business Management.
