Beyond the backyard there were hills and somewhere out there, frogs croaked, crows flew, and the intent crickets made noise. The house was on a cul-de-sac and spaced far apart from the houses on either side. It was a two-story place, and the yard in back was a world unto its self. There were thousands of nooks and crannies, and in each could be found a container of flowers growing in good dark soil, or a little area of red mulch chips with a small statue on top, of a squirrel, or some other animal. There were ledges and retaining walls, some made from stone, and others made from railway ties. Mulberry trees grew in corners, and there was mystery inside of them, and the little berries seemed to smile up at the sun. There were hoses, and some were black, and some were green as they sat coiled beside watering cans weighted with rocks on the inside. There was a large fence, stained perfectly, so that it looked like it was always wet. It was not too light, and not too dark. There were hanging plants coming down from it, and the rain the sun and the air had made the plants to grow so full that they had outdone themselves. There were smaller plants too, still growing, sometimes seeming to apologize for being there, but they would catch on. There were two sheds- one with a tin roof, and one with a shingled black roof. The wind broke up before it got to that yard, to that place, to that sanctuary, but it still had enough gusto to sound the small, medium, and large chimes. The chimes were made from metal mostly, but there were some wooden ones. Across the brick paths of the area, cats would walk while the chimes sounded. In the middle of August, deep in the afternoon, it could get so hot, that one was forced to lose all past or future while being there. It was a type of enlightenment there, by the cats and the flowers, and the ways of that place.
