Iraq War Funding

By Michelle Malsbury
May 23, 2007

Yesterday newscasters across the nation were talking about the democrats backing down to pressure from this White house to fund the ongoing war in Iraq. Time and again President Bush said he would veto any legislation that created timelines or benchmarks for this war in Iraq. President Bush made good on that the first time the congress sent such legislation to curtail this war. He vetoed it. Part of this new deal continues to be timetables or benchmarks that would be met in order to continue this funding on behalf of the Iraqi’s which is a step in the right direction, but the ability to either sign off on these benchmarks or let things remain the same comes right back to President Bush who will never end this war or stop the funding for it.

During the first presidential debates Dennis Kucinich (democratic candidate) was the most outspoken and outraged at how congress is allowing things to progress pretty much as the same as before (under republican rule). Same ole same ole means that the democrats are not taking a stance against anything unpopular or against President Bush’s wishes. By virtue of not doing anything the democrats are proving to the American public that they were unworthy of our votes. The democrats are showing their bases that they are not able to effectuate the change in direction that they promised us when our voices cried loud and clear that fine day in November of 2007’s mid-term elections.

Perhaps Jack Cafferty of CNN News said it best when he said “the democrats folded under pressure from President Bush like a cheap tent from Sears”. (May 22, 2007, CNN  News, The Situation Room segment) We cannot afford to fold under the mounting threats and tirades that this Administration is famous for. We cannot afford to continue to let this Administration run amuck without oversight by skirting or rewriting the laws set forth for the rest of us. We cannot continue to allow funding for this war when supporting our troops means bringing them home and back to the safety of the United States. A vote for any funding is a vote to continue this idiotic war that is rapidly building our national debt and killing more and more innocent lives daily. Therefore, we need to call or write our congress people to tell them that we will not stand still for their broken promises. The time to act is NOW because time is of the essence!
