May 15, 2007 The famous century-old "Time" magazine in America has published its list of hundred most famous greatest men and women in the world. Names like Bill Gates, Osama Bin Laden, Queen Elizabeth and Archbishop Peter Akinola the Head of the Nigerian Anglican faith made the list. Needless to say here that Akinola is the only Nigerian on that list of the great and powerful. Since "Time" magazine does not recognise mediocrity or kleptocracy (but outstanding meritorious characters) names like Ibrahim Babangida, Olusegun Obasanjo and late Sani Abacha do not stand any chance of making the list even if they use American heavily-paid lobby groups to try to pay their entry or smuggle their filthy names into the fold through graft. The magazine annually rewards excellence and honours positive achievements across the globe for heroically good or revolutionally bad. The latter explains the inclusion of the modern father of terrorism in the world Osama Bin Laden whose state of existence is still shrouded in mystery: whether he is dead or alive is a matter for conjecture even by American eagle-eyed intelligence egg-heads. Osama Bin Laden shook the world on September 11 2001 when his mercenaries hijacked mid-air some flights and used them with passengers on board to deliver a horrible message that reverberated across the whole world announcing the birth of another form of terorism, one that seeks to inflict maximum casualty on the 'infidels' wherever they are found. Since then Bin Laden has become a household name as the leader and spiritual commander of Al Queda terrorist network; to some he remains an eccentric religious bigot, a demented Islamic extremist but to many fellow muslims he is a hero who sought to demystify America and took the 'war' to its homestead. Let's give it to him: Osama struck a historic chord on 9/11 registering awfully in global consciousness the true meaning of horrible terror; he redefined terror and gave it a global new dimension and appeal that will stay as long as the universe continues its inexorable natural course. By achieving that feat leaving in its wake a whole lot of security consciousness hitherto unenvisaged (from Washington DC, to London to Tokyo to Sidney) in human consciousness Ben Ladin made history in the rank of Adolphus Hitler, Mussolini and HIV/AIDS. Osama Bin Laden may well be a devil in human form who decided to come out of hell to be seen and heard taking head-on the last super power standing in a well-defined terror Armaggedon with unimaginable consequencies for mankind. America, a great nation with unparalelled prosperity and freedom witnessed a colossal unprecedented challenge on September 11th but it rose to the challenge seeking to asphyxiate the huge menace mustering every energy and rebounding power and influence she could give. In the end the war on teror has borne positive fruits: Osama was first hit in Sudan where he was a cave man. He chose Afghanistan where the mad Mullah Omar and his Taliban were holding sway but before long the American armada sought him out and decimated the Taliban forces forcing Osama away to the cave again in Tora Bora. Now Osama may well be dead but it is highly likely that he is still very much alive, in isolation underground somewhere in the no man's land border enclave between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Since Saudi Arabia has since disowned Osama he stands today as a vagabond, a nationless ass-hole looking for a refuge which is non-existent. Because of 9/11 Saddam Hussein is gone, hanged for having 'some links' with the muslim dogs of terror, because of 9/11 the 'Axis of Evil' speech by president Bush sought to pile up diplomatic military pressure on Iran, North Korea and conquered Iraq. Bacause of 9/11 some decent muslims are having a rough deal around the world experiencing what some Nigerians go through because some of our compatriots engaging in illicit drug peddling and '419'. Because of 9/11 America is now more of a closed closely-monitored society than ever before. Because of 9/11 security goons and their organizations like Isreali Mossad, American FBI and CIA and the British Scotland Yard are at red alert at all times working round the clock to pre-empt and foil any terrorist strike. Because of 9/11 and its aftermath the Arab world now have their own CNN in Al Jazeera satellite TV station propagating propaganda and countering the Western press. Though Bush and Blair could have been said to have erred by invading Iraq with spurious security reports and intelligence supposing late Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction events in Iraq has continued to baffle political pundits; rather than improve issues are degenerating further: issues of democracy, security, taming last vestiges of terror and post-Saddam realities. The British Prime Minister Blair has been forced by the Iraqi circumstances and opposition pressure in London to capitulate to the announcement of a date with severance of power; G W Bush is warding off Democracts' constant pounding over Iraq and the huge miscalculations and mistakes with the latter reluctant to approve further funds. Osama Bin Laden and his terrorism has since made a point: the need for the West to evaluate and re-evaluate their imperialistic neo-colonial mentality. Again I believe Osama has an axe to grind with monstrous capitalism and its inherent pauperization of the greater percentage of the human population. In these two aforementioned cases America and her allies in Europe are culpable. The world will be a better place if issues of religious prejudice and class conflict are worked on by those who could and would.
