May 11, 2007 Here at Humboldt State University the Spring 2007 semester is over. Today is the last day of finals. I have completed all my assignments. A foray into Useless-Knowledge territory is a refreshment... from my point of view, anyway. Alas for some readers, I am even more focused on the study of yoga = union = unity and the sense of continuity that the sense of unity brings. And so for awhile this summer I will harp on this subject, hoping that all U-K minds are encouraged to go back and review some of their mathematics. I argue that the key to understanding unity = union = yoga is in precise understanding of mathematical language. Through hard studies more bliss is obtained, even if you don't get As or Bs. Unfortunately, the subject of mathematics frightens even many otherwise highly educated people. I myself became very intimidated by mathematics because of the way my high school teachers taught the subject. Then in my second year of college, after nearly flunking an exam in first semester calculus, the kind professor told me I was very weak in algebra even though I'd already taken two years of algebra back in public school. He encouraged me to purchase a single plastic sheet on whose two sides the basic ideas of algebra were presented: the rules of the game so-to-speak. For me the uncertainty and mystery of algebra was over! My test grades improved! Mathematics actually begins when a child moves freely in space. The sense of continuity is felt. A child who is rocked in loving arms or who rocks in a swing feels this free and easy motion. I imagine that skydivers feel this thrill even more, and it gives then an extreme natural high! Indeed, the sense of continuous free fall and the sense of riding the wind in a motorless glider is rather comparable to the feel of swinging a golf club with effortless grace and seeing the ball fly on a wide and graceful arc. Zen archers get the same high in drawing back arrows and releasing them and following their mercurial flight. This helps them connect to what is sometimes called "the Absolute" and "The One." Continuity has actually been studied by philosophers and mathematicians since the time of Zeno and Archimedes. The calculus, conceived at about the same time by both Newton and Leibniz, made use of the idea of continuity to justify the use of differentials and integrals. These mathematical devices have proved indispensible for science. I celebrate all these subjects, therefore, when I am in my calmest and most effective mood. It's not yet popular, however, this integration of the rational intellect with the sense of continuity. The sense of continuity is not something commonly studied in psychology, either. The sense of continuity causes persons to feel connected to whatever they see, hear, or otherwise feel. The sense of continuity rather combines everything into one integrated peaceful world with a great many integrated world teachers who actually agree. (Otherwise there would not be peace.) In reading a sentence, you pay attention to one word at a time. You read the next sentence in the same way. Whole pages may follow. To follow the text you stay retentive, alert, and vigilant against an error in logic or some other mistake. For example, you don't want the writer to have confused the idea of a jacket with the idea of a shirt, or the idea of a bullet with the idea of a teacup. You also expect the writer to avoid logical errors. This is particularly true when you are not reading hilarious nonsense like Mother Goose, Richard Brautigan, or Ezra Pound. When a person feels connected, however, they are no longer vigilant. In fact a non-vigilant person who feels very connected is not able to read easily or well. Yogis actually attain their unitive sense by paying minimal attention to what is written or what is said. A certain sensibility over-rides all else during the highest yogic bliss. I claim that by using mathematical language we can clearly understand the "divine" sense of unity = union = yoga. This makes this sense of sublime joy accessible to many more people! Hence world peace actually is possible along with much more joy! If you read other articles I have written for U-K, you will see that from time to time I identify myself as "The Jester." At other times I identify myself as "Green Frog." I sometimes write something silly or illogical, and sometimes someone writes in and tries to correct me or expose me as a crazy person. But really, the language of English can be very funny. When it comes to being precise and serious, sincere people focus upon mathematical language. This need for precision language is tantamount. As a young man I was bright with numbers, but when mathematics became very verbal and logical, as in Plane Geometry, I didn't do well. In college I was said to have a good mathematical intuition. In proving mathematical ideas I was advised to find a collaborator. Over the past six years I've been sharing my papers with some student editors and some professors also. Most of them don't appear to think I'm crazy. But I admit that my focus of my research is not ordinary. I continue to do the best I can by writing alone. Then other people provide comments and assistance when necessary. In my last article entitled "Distortions and Replications," my language itself became a bit distorted and funny. In my writing didn't always try to be logical. Neither did I try and get into a debate with anybody. I don't think there is much to debate about my work. I just present a few basic ideas and say the next step is for people to test my ideas and my method, under the supervision of kind and caring people who also have studied my work. Probably some experienced yogis will be helping, also. This peace work profoundly affects human brain functioning. Traditional yogic mastery of the sense of unity does not present the student with an intellectual mastery of mathematical language. In fact in traditional yoga the intellect is denied or transcended. My work is revolutionary because in my work the brain becomes integrated. Integration means you reject no faculty, idea, person, thing, or process! The happiness and calmness that is present in yogis is present with children who are learning about math and other languages as well as sensing the same happiness the yogis sense. This mastery of integration makes a very heavenly social atmosphere. In our present highly militaristic culture it's normal for school children to be vigilant and excited. Many different voices and faces meet at school and this is very stimulating. The vigilance is enhanced by fast ball games, fast class work and other speedy routines. From time to time the children are speed-tested in intelligence testing and other testing for points and for grades. All this emphasis on vigilance, speed, and memory works part of the developing brain and allows other parts of the brain to atrophy from lack of use. Brain integration brings a greater balance. This is why the peace culture truly is a brand new culture. A study of modern mathematics brings each student in close contact with such concepts as zero, infinity, the various kinds of non-zero numbers, continuity, and other concepts that are precisely defined and are absolutely essential in the modern sciences. Many students study these subjects today, but the connection between mathematics and human brains is not yet taught. In fact students of medicine and psychology are generally not required to study a lot of modern mathematics. In fact this very idea might seem silly to some people, including college and university administrators. ------------ About the author: sixty-seven years of age, and still relatively vigorous in mind, body, emotions, and spirit, John L. Waters is an independent researcher on self-healing, integration, creativity, and unity. To help demonstrate the effectiveness of his research, John has created thousands of drawings, paintings, instrumental music pieces, songs, prose pieces, poems, and other inventions. John has also used his research to help persons remove a mental block and solve a difficult problem. John also gives personal presentations which explain his research and illustrate his research results. Each one of these works demonstrates the effectiveness of John's research.
