Why I Left The Republican Party

By Amanda Baker
May 11, 2007

I used to be a Republican. Let me explain, I was raised in one of the most conservative states in this union: Alaska. This state elects Republicans so predictably, it has one of the most powerful and influential senators: Sen. Ted Stevens. I did not go along to get along, I really believed in what was explained to me that the Republican Party stood for:

From what I understood the Republican Party stood for freedom of commerce, and freedom from government intrusion. They supported a strong military and small government. The Republican Party did not have "Church Republicans" that want to dictate to a person what they can or can not with their bodies, when I was taught about the Republican Party.

The party has sadly changed into a big regulatory machine. It has supported taking away privacy, in the name of security. It has supported prejudice against individuals who just want to be left alone and do their own thing. And the party supports a larger bureaucracy.

I left the party during the Dole vs Clinton election and became a Libertarian-a more conservative group. I still voted for Dole. I did this because the Libertarian Party wanted to get their party candidate for president on the ballot and I do believe that this country should have more choices when an election happens. Libertarians believe that the government needs to stay out of our homes.

I became an independent during the Bush vs. Gore election because Pat Buchanan was running as an independent. He had been rejected by the Republican Party because his views were too conservative. I voted for Mr Buchanan, because he ran a clean campaign with an African American woman for vice-president.

I decided to support Hilary Clinton this election because of her stand on health care for veterans. She has a strong health care background with her failed health care agenda, which happened during her husbands presidency. She has solid independent ideas that sometimes go against her party line.

I like that, we need independent thinkers in the White House. There needs to be more debate between the parties not less. I am a dissatisfied with the current Republican Party that left it's core goals purely to get elected. The party was not floundering before Bush was elected. They gained the majority in the Senate and Congress because the American public thought, during the Clinton administration, that the government was not doing the will of the people.

The Republican party had a chance. It lost it's chance in a short twelve years, compared to the Democrat's that held that power for forty years. I hope the Republicans remember their core values or more people will find other candidates to support.

We the people, want, need, hope, for smaller government and a free market with enough jobs to support our families. Maybe taxes need to go up to pay for the larger government that the Republicans have created.
