Stop the World...Paris is going to Jail!

By Meri Ulrich
May 8, 2007

I have written several pieces here on our current culture and how it has apparently gone to the dogs (my apologies to dogs everywhere).

Last Friday, Paris Hilton was sentenced to 45 days in jail for violating her probation in regard to driving without a license, a previous DUI and other infractions of the law.

You and I would NEVER have been given as many options as Paris was given in order not to serve jail time. You and I would have been thrown in a lock-up for the night at the very least.

Paris was given the option of attending an 8 hour class on alcohol and drug use or 30 hours of community service to avoid a jail sentence but she did neither. Her schedule is far to full to be bothered with spending any time doing the right thing. Neither of the above choices pays any money so they would have no appeal for Paris.

When the Judge handed down her sentence her enabling, greedy, self-indulgent mother became abusive to the Judge and the Prosecutors and you and I would have been held in contempt of court for that behavior. Mrs. Hilton was not. Nothing was done about her outbursts.

There are two very different sets of rules for the rich and infamous and the rest of us and Paris and her family are among those who really don't have to obey the same laws as the rest of us.

The horrifying part of all this is not poor Paris and her jail term or even her ridiculous mother's behavior. It isn't the fact that we aren't treated the same as people like her. The horrifying part is that Paris will become even more famous (infamous) after all of this and she will make even more ill-begotten money from her obnoxious behavior.

When will the parents in this country start to look closely at who their children are holding up as role models? When will they see that Paris represents the worst part of our already skewed culture? When will they educate their children that people like Paris and Britney and the rest of the freaks out there are not the people we want our children to look up too?

This nonsense won't stop until the average citizen takes back our culture and gives our children something positive to strive for.

The Judge did the right thing regarding Paris but I am not convinced that she won't win an appeal and not serve one day in a jail cell.

This is like a disease and it has spread throughout our entire society and like any other infectious disease, it needs to be stopped. If it isn't...we will have a very bleak future and our children will have none at all.
