What Could Be Thomas Keyes' Motivation?

By Ron Lewis
May 8, 2007

I recently submitted an essay as my entry in the site’s 500-Word Contest.  For some reason, Thomas Keyes felt the need to post an article criticizing my use of two foreign-language phrases and went as far as to encourage our readers not to vote for my article in the contest.  What could have motivated Thomas to write such an ugly article and to unfairly try to influence what is supposed to be a fair and friendly contest with blind judging?

I think it should be fairly easy to identify his possible motivations.  Per his claim, Thomas is a student of languages; maybe he just wanted to show off his knowledge.  Perhaps he feared that our readers would not recognize the mistakes and therefore not judge my writing fairly in the contest.  Could it be that he is just a vile, rude person indulging in routine character assassination?  Or, does he have a personal vendetta against me that motivates him?  I can’t think of any other possible motivations.

As to a possible claim that his passion for languages motivates him to attack me, it seems patently untrue.  The appropriate location for comments on the work of other U-K authors is in the Rebuttals section.  A search of that section reveals that Thomas is a frequent contributor and has in the past posted such language critiques in the section.  He must have another motivation for making an exception of my article with his main page criticism knowing that the readers could care less about esoteric language translations.

One could claim that his article’s criticism of me was secondary to his primary motivation of showing off his knowledge of languages.  That would be hard to deny, Thomas’ huge and undeserved ego has been demonstrated on this site many times.  Still, he has many opportunities to strut about in his daily (twice-daily?) U-K articles, and there are too many other examples of him not attacking in this way to explain the exception in my case.

Does he fear an unfair advantage to me in the 500-Word Contest from ignorance as to the correct translations of those phrases?  Possibly, he does exhibit paranoia at times, especially regarding Jews.  Does he think I am Jewish?  I believe Jerry Lewis was Jewish, maybe he thinks us related?  But no, I don’t really think his paranoia motivates in this instance.  Thomas knows, as does everyone who visits the Rebuttals section, that a 500-Word Contest thread has been started in the Community section specifically for posts that identify errors such as those he imagines in my article.  Every contest entry to date has been reviewed for grammar and spelling content.  The important differentiation is that those reviews do not attempt to influence the voters as Thomas does in his attack on me.  Those reviews just points out the mistakes and allow the reader to assign a value to them.  Maybe Thomas thought it would be out-of-place to launch an attack against another entry in that forum?  He would have been right, but why doesn’t he see that it is even more offensive to do it on the main page?

Does Thomas attack me because he is just a vile, rude person who indulges in routine character assassination?  I’m sad to say yes, that is the case.  One has only to read his cruel assessments of Jews and gays to know the man is filled with hatred.  However, I do not think that routine rudeness is his primary motivation in this case.

I think Thomas’ primary motivation is a personal vendetta against me.  Although my byline has not appeared on this site in more than a year, Thomas carries a long grudge.  It has never been publicly stated on the site, but Thomas was one of two people who orchestrated the vote fraud that got me kicked off this site so long ago.  I’m sure he was livid upon seeing my contest entry.

What is the reason for his anger towards me?  I disputed his bigotry towards Jews.  I find it hilarious that one of Thomas’ delusions about Jews is that they manipulate the media, yet he attempts to manipulate U-K with his voter fraud and unethical contest propaganda.

I should note before I leave y’all to shake your heads in disgust at Tawdry Thomas, that his criticism was foolish as well.  Despite being a self-proclaimed master of languages, Thomas is just not that great at reading comprehension.  The two passages he cites in his ugly attack on me were not only foreign languages to me and most of our readers – such that nobody reading it knows if they’re right or wrong anyway – they were foreign to the characters speaking them in my article.  I did not intend those characters to be fluent in those languages and, in fact, was intentionally trying to demonstrate that they were not fluent to emphasize how their lives would change under new masters.

Imagine Edgar Rice Burroughs writing Tarzan’s dialogue (Me Tarzan, You Jane, Umgowah) and Thomas attacking him for Tarzan’s poor speech.  If Thomas could actually comprehend languages, I think he would enjoy reading much more.

Finally, irrespective of Thomas’ criticism, I hope there is a better article than mine and that you vote for it.  I don’t consider my article that great and figured its partisan slant would dissuade most voters anyway.  However, if Thomas posts an entry, don’t be surprised if he tells you how wonderful it is.  I’ve already heard similar egoism from another entrant.
