The Battle Of Survival

500-Word Contest Entry
By Sunny Chris Okenwa
May 5, 2007

It all happened on Dec. 16th 2004. But it started few days before. I was having a terrible pain in my stomarch, an excruciating stomarch disorder never before experienced. Sleeping or eating were made difficult if not impossible. On board an ET aircraft that ferried me to Lagos from here I had felt a pulsating sustained assault on my abdominal chambers by a seemingly ruthless invading army of tiny 'snakes' in angry fit of 'rioting' in discomforting complicity with other worm elements. It was an inexplicable terror that enveloped my protruding bowel emitting hot cascading sweat and distress!

My brother met me at the MMA airport and we drove home. At home the wife was desirous of me having lunch but I was desirous of having a medical test to ascertain what was wrong with my abdomen, the searing pain of which deprived my full standing and temporarily impaired my vision and movement. Off we went to a lab where a test was conducted and it was discovered unsurprisingly that it was appendicitis in its terminal dangerous stage and only an emergency operation could save my life. Off we went to a hospital.

In the hospital the doctor after some observation asked a nurse to take me in to have my private hair shaved off preparatory for an operation. Despite the nagging pain within my abdominal zone I was in high spirits and prospects of an emergency operation never weighed me down. Rather positive thoughts of survival filled my inner consciousness.

In the theater the doctor was leading us in prayer when suddenly in the middle of the prayer I lost consciousness having been injected with sleep-inducing drugs. When I woke up around midnight I beheld my terrible state with a bandage on the right side of my abdomen. Standing from the bed or making any move therefrom was practically impossible as the pain killers I was injected with had elapsed their time (effective) limit thus provoking serious unbearable pain borne with stoicism.

Momentarily I felt a sense of revulsion as I woke up into darkness as there was a power outage with a lantern serving as an inconvenient alternative! You could then imagine how terribly disappointed I felt with my home government and its spectacular irresponsibility. The gas that powered the generator had packed up, burnt up at the middle of the night. I was gasping for breath subdued by both physical exhaustion and spiritual void. Reaching for my Bible I managed to read Psalms 23 and launched into praise and worship songs!

Springing on to my feet, urinating or eating were impossible as I went through hell recuperating from the operation. Days gone by I was discharged and few days later I came back to the hospital to have the 'wire' used to stitch up and hold together the torn part of my abdomen torn itself.

I bounced back to my full feet and we travelled to the village on the 26th Dec for the Xmas/New year festivities.
