Commitment To Witness

By Skip Toomaloo

“I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O LORD, will I sing. I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes...” (Psalm 101:1-3a)

The Lord God is the only one worthy of worship. He is sovereign over all of his creation and he deals only the correct judgments against or for his human creations. His mercy is not only everlasting, but it is ever presented as a gift to be claimed by the trusting.

The word “perfect” is used twice above. Perfection is something any Christian should be working for in his individual life. Our relationship with God is extremely personal and individual. Each of us lives knowing God is the director of each day we walk and talk amid the world of men. Our testimonies should be spotless and un-blamable.

The correct thing to do is to keep wicked things from our sight. There should be no temptations to overcome and within the body of faith we should always strive to walk with a “perfect heart”. When we fail (and we should not be so prideful to think we will not fail occasionally) we should call upon the Lord to come upon us and give us the spiritual strength to overcome our obstacles.

The body of faith is a house. More, it is a temple that the Lord indwells. It should remain a holy place where judgment is in accordance with God’s will and mercy is always prepared to bring one to faith.

This is the witness of the Christian. We are called to be a light to the world. We are called to be a salt that gives flavor to the words God directed to save souls from eternal death. Salt without saltiness isn’t useful in the least. There is no rule against being a “salty” Christian. If sometimes we face opposition, standing in the truth of God will overcome that opposition. Nothing stands before the truth of the Lord.

We should strive to “behave wisely” in a “perfect way”. It may be true that none of us really know how to do that in today’s world, but the examples of scripture are very clear. We see the examples of Job, and of Paul the Apostle. We are encouraged by the examples of the early church fathers and the martyrs who chose death over compromise. Where such faith stands today is only in the Lord’s view. Each of us must answer our own calling as we face it.

We will face our calling. We must remain true to our personal testimony and our witness for God. We should never be ashamed of the Gospel of Christ because it is the only message of salvation to the believer. Who will hear that message unless faithful men and women carry it to the ears that need to hear?

When you gave yourself to Christ you took upon yourself the great challenge of the oracle. You became an oracle incapable of telling lies or misleading souls. Your guide dwells within you and is the director of your knowledge and your words. All you need do is trust the Holy Spirit and he will guide you into all truth. Too he will always respond to your needs for wisdom and spiritual strength when faced with temptation or doubt.

He is the Holy Spirit who grounds you in the words of God’s expressed testimony. God does not talk directly to men in this age except through those who have become his witnesses. That there are witnesses is proof that God still takes great strides in bringing men to that point of salvation.

We are soon to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Without faith in the resurrection we know all faith is vanity and men remain dead in their sin. But the witness is sure. The witness spoke through holy men of God who wrote the various letters and histories of the Lord Jesus. These men were eyewitnesses of the time God stepped physically among men, giving each gifts and saving their souls.

Christian, your commitment to witness is simple and very plain. The Holy Spirit is your help. The Word of God is your word. Be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might.
