Profiles In Cowardice

By Craig Chamberlain
Mar. 29, 2007

The problem with the Senate is that all Senators look in the mirror and see themselves as Henry Clay. The statesman who puts the good of the country over his political interests. The believe that the good of the republic rests on their shoulders. The problem with this image is that it isn’t true. Senators, like all elected officials, are politicians first.

When you act like a politician you are looking after one of two things. Either you’re looking after a narrow interest that you represent, or that you are only looking after your political future. The country can go to hell.

Two Senators who are deserving especially of contempt are Gordon Smith(R-Ore), and Chuck Hagel (R-Ne). They are especially deserving of contempt because they should know better. Well, Smith should anyway. Hagel just loves having glowing articles written about him in the Washington Post and is never going to take a courageous stand that would cause that to come to an end. Why are they deserving of contempt? The Senate has voted 50-48 to make a deadline for withdrawing the troops a condition for funding the war. Smith and Hagel were the only two members of the GOP to vote with the democrats in favor of surrender.

Senator Smith, who had previously voted against withdrawal decided that now would be the time to ally himself with the forces of surrender. Apparently he is more desirous to have himself reelected in Oregon, typically not a state friendly to GOP candidates, than he is in seeing America winning this battle in Iraq.

Now that Senator Smith has suddenly seen the light, what will this do? Well, it certainly sends a good message doesn’t it? To enemies and allies alike it says that we don’t have the stamina to keep the fight going for the long hall. Osama Bin Laden always said that Americans would run away from a fight once the casualties started to mount. Now Harry Reid has made sure that the Senate agrees with him, and Senator Smith was only too happy to go along.

I don’t understand how half of one hundred supposedly intelligent men and women can be so stupid. Either they don’t see the truth or they don’t care about it. Leaving Iraq before we have achieved victory will only embolden the terrorists, and the states that sponsor them. If we leave while foreign states are trying to bring down the democratic government and turn Iraq into a terrorist safe haven the terrorists will be allowed to declare victory.

We have spent almost six years on the offensive, driving them out of their safe havens, liberating countries, overthrowing the governments that supported them, and eliminating their cells. In that time we have not had another attack on American soil. Give them Iraq and we will see plenty more September 11th’s.

A Senator who is only interested in his reelection campaign, even at the cost of the countries safety, does not deserve to be in the Senate at all. Senators Smith and Hagel would do well to remember that. We may not always have a President who will veto such nonsense, and one day we might have to live with the stupidity of the Senate.
