Remember 1979????

By Meri Ulrich
Mar. 28, 2007

As I sat glued to my television set night after night watching Ted Koppel count down the days that the Iranian Ayatollah and his henchmen held innocent human hostages, an era was born.

The beginning of news broadcasts that had a running theme and were aimed at the hearts and minds of American's all across the land, had the intended impact on this citizen.

Soon, there was CNN and the first Gulf War with it's up close and personal scenes of precise targets as they were being blown to smithereens. Words like "Collateral Damage" were common place at water coolers and I was learning more and more every day about how the modern military fights wars.

During the Viet Nam era I was exposed to nightly dinnertime scenes of bodies strewn about and enough gore to last me a lifetime but that was then and things have changed. Now, we see precision bombing raids that eventually turn into street fights with unseen insurgents who look like the very people who are fighting beside our soldiers. It's hard to tell the difference between friend and foe....and many have paid the price for not knowing the difference. How could they?

In the midst of all of this the Iranians have once again taken a group of British military personnel hostage and rather than admit what they have done they are allowing the women to be released just like we see at the scene of crimes unfolding on our local news channels.

While all of this is going on I hear the loud screeching of Nancy Grace, Kimberly Guilfoyle and many others calling for what they insist is justice for a dead Anna Nicole Smith and her son. During this theater of the absurd we hear from Mark Fuhrman as he disputes Joshua Perper's autopsy report and the Seminole Police Department's investigation as incomplete. ONLY Mr. Fuhrman could do a proper investigation.....no one else is qualified. I suppose one of the qualifications necessary to match Mr. Fuhrman's expertise is that one must be convicted of perjury before conducting a proper investigation???

I am sick of the wailing witches of cable and their kangaroo courts. I am tired of their bogus talking heads and pretend BFF's of Anna Nicole coming forward to crucify people without one shred of real proof that any criminal act occurred.

Today, the renown Doctor Cyril Wecht finally snapped and stated that this entire thing was ridiculous and that nothing being implied was even close to the facts. He conducted the private autopsy on Daniel Smith and he should know what he is talking about. I agreed with him and was relieved that I had heard ONE voice of reason outside of Doctor Joshua Perper.

Doctor Wecht placed the blame exactly where it should be...on the addict herself and the lifestyle that she lived. He said what I have been thinking for weeks; if the wailing witches of cable were correct in their assumptions then hundreds of thousands of parents, siblings, spouses, friends, neighbors and even perfect strangers would now be in jail for not stopping addicts from using.

I have watched the usually politically oriented Hannity and Combs go off on a nightly tangent about Howard K. Stern and wondered what had happened to the original premise of their show.

I expect Nancy Grace, and the others to whine and whine and repeat and repeat the crap that they are being fed by parties chasing the money trail in this sad case but I never expected to see that on Hannity and Combs. I often disagree with one or the other of them regarding political issues but at least they presented TWO sides to every story that they used to cover. Now it's all the same rhetoric and it's all one-sided. So much for Fox's proclamation that they are "Fair and Balanced".

Every time I turn on my television set and the garbage starts to spew from the mouths of people who claim to be professional journalists I try to remember 1979 and Ted Koppel. He reported the facts as they occurred. He did not make them up as he went along. He checked his facts and then checked them again and we were riveted to our seats as we watched our world change before our eyes. He was a real journalist.

What substitutes for the true professionals now are the wailing witches of cable and their bogus idea of journalism.

The world is a much poorer place for the loss of honesty in reporting the news.
