![]() By Jack Lepiarz Mar. 26, 2007 Last Saturday, the UN Security Council approved a number of new sanctions against Iran for failing to shut down its nuclear program. The sanctions included trade embargoes and the freezing of assets of roughly 28 different accounts related to Iran's nuclear ambitions. That same day, Iran captured 15 British sailors, accusing them of crossing into Iranian territory. They were taken in for questioning and have not been released yet. What I'm saying is, why isn't any of this on the news? I've watched CNN for almost an hour now and absolutely nothing! It seems like the only story right now is that Anna Nicole Smith died of a drug overdose. All right, fine. Put it down as a small news peg, that's all I need to know. I don't need CNN to re-broadcast her entire life. We have a serious and "fundamental issue," as British Prime Minister Tony Blair calls it, and yet the major television networks aren't saying anything about it. This is a serious development that could lead to war between Iran and the UK and yet we're too worried about a woman who flat lined nearly two months ago. It's old news! Get over it! "I hope the Iranian government will understand how fundamental an issue his is for us," Blair said yesterday. The interesting thing about this whole situation is that it the exact same thing happened three years ago in 2004. Iran captured three British patrol boats and captured eight Royal Navy Sailors and six Royal Marines. They later appeared on Iranian television blindfolded and were released three days later when they Iranian Foreign Ministry said that it had determined that they had accidentally entered Iranian territory. So basically, we have the exact same situation now. British intelligence says that the sailors were definitely not in Iranian territory, but Iran has said that the sailors confessed to being in Iranian territory. "There is no doubt at all that these people were taken from Iraqi waters," Blair insisted, "It is simply not true that they went into Iranian territorial waters." There is speculation that this is simply a way for Iran to flex its muscles, especially after several Iranian operatives were captured in Iraq. It might also be retribution for the recent sanctions against them. Hard to say. What we can say is that this is more important than a societally worthless and deceased woman (sorry Anna). Like I said before, there are 15 lives at stake here, possibly even more. Why are we wasting our time talking about a woman who took too many drugs instead of focusing on the more important issue here? ------------ About the author: Jack Lepiarz is an 18-year-old college student at Emerson College in Boston.
