Mar. 25, 2007 Democracy can best be described as the government of the majority with equitable consideraton of all which thrives on the rule of law and due process. There's no better country in this world that practises democracy in it's true form than the United States Of America. America and Americans have sacrificed a lot for democracy and it's enthronement around the world. Over there in Uncle Sam democracy has been developed to be greater than any individual be he president or whatever. And institutions that make this beautiful system of government function properly without ecumbrances have over time been strenghtened to guard against a Thomas Cromwell commiting political heresy or suicide in the States, the land of the free. With eyes fixed ambitiously towards next year's presidential election the American politicians especially the Democrats are bracing themselves up to wrestle power from the Republicans. With President George Bush's Iraqi and anti-terrorism wars costing Americans dearly in terms of huge funds expended and soldiers killed or wounded the Americans are fed up with the hawkish attitudes of the Republicans most especially a George Bush whose war-mongering antics at White House has led Americans to desire a change in foreign policies and more time and resources devoted to domestic problems and issues. President Bush has done a lot to further the cause of the American super power claims yet his prosecution of the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the middle east has got a lot of Americans thinking over their sustainability and total long-lasting victory on different fronts. Give it to him: President Bush is a courageous no-nonsense leader who's not afraid to take on any retrogressive force or nation that tends to reverse the gains of globalisation or new world order. His "axis of evil" speech soon after the calamity of 9/11 underscored his resolve to confront the three listed terrorist nations or sponsors: Iraq, Iran and North Korea. After the 9/11 unfortunate tragic incident in New York when the muslim dogs of terror invaded the American hitherto seemingly impregnable air-spaces hijacking air-borne aircrafts and ramming them with thousands on board into the World Trade Center in the Big Apple and the Pentagon Bush came out fuming in anger promising to weed out those who were hell-bent on changing the course of history. In the end the mastermind of that 2001 ugly episode Osama Bin Laden is still in hiding driven from both Sudan and Afghanistan; he may have died in the process of a water-tight manhunt for his head on a platter. The Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein had been caught and hanged while Iraq has embraced democracy although victory in the war to change minds and perceptions cannot be said to have been won altogether. The world may not have been rid of terrorism as one still sees and hears resistances in different countries in the West where the terror agents use bombs, suicide-bombers and car bombs to announce their readiness to continue their dangerous campaign and agression against the global peace. If a presidential election were to be held tomorrow the Republicans are sure of defeat the same way they suffered resounding electoral losses in the November last year mid-term elections. This scenario then leaves the Democrats with the choice of producing a credible presidential candidate who will give the final electoral blow to the Republicans come next year. The two frontrunners include the senator wife of former charismatic president Bill Clinton, Hilary and the black American witty black Democratic Senator from Illinois Barack Obama. The Kenyan-father-born American-mother-born Obama has been riding high in the American politics where intelligence and leadership qualities are the crucial factors for winning elections. His profile has been on the rise in the opinion polls because he's a combination of brain and good home background. A realist, Barack the son of Obama is confident of himself, of America, of his ambition and of what he's inching towards to achieve. Watching Obama the other day declare in a campaign visit to Selma Alabama, a city noted for civil rights activism during the time of late Rev. Martin Luther King “I stand on the shoulders of giants" made one appraise positively this great mind who has already made history where others of his ilk had failed. “I’m here because somebody marched for freedom. I’m here because you all sacrificed for me,” he said in the AME church used as a headquarters before the march by the civil rights leader late Rev. King. Though the Clintons equally visited the city same day to woo crucial black voters Obama received more accolades and ovation for standing up and being counted in a clime where stereotypes about blacks are legendary. This 'barrack' of a man could well be the first black president in the making! And the fortress he's constructing in his 'barracks' may well see him through. In the end I believe Mrs Clinton even with the fanatical backing of her politically deft husband may not have an easy victory over Barack Obama because before coming into politics Obama went to school where he obtained a sound impeccable education in the best institutions of higher learning in America. And studied the terrain carefully weighing his chances. He has made up his mind, it would seem, that the time has come to break even. As we await the final outcome (winner and loser) of the Democratic nomination for a flag bearer in the presidential election of 2008 the raging political rivalry between the Clintons and Obama is an interesting one to follow closely. Because all things being equal whoever emerges between the two as the contender for White House will most definitely clinch the presidency. That is why all hands are on deck in the political calculations towards succession. Obama Barack, who's more white than black a la Colin Powell pigmentation wise is set to, as the French would say "casé les barrack", that is break down the frontier of racial prejudice and discrimination in America. And in the process change definitely the way and manner blacks are viewed in America and elsewhere in the wider West. He has my unfliching support and that of other blacks and whites alike even morally as he goes about accomplishing this seemingly herculean but not impossible mission which he's eminently qualified to undertake with history on his side.
