Mar. 23, 2007 I have for as long as I can remember, marveled at the way black people have embraced Christianity. As I grew older, I studied the true history of many of my ancestors and learned that before coming to America, Christianity was unknown to them. The religions that were common to the peoples of West Africa were Islam; for those in more central and northern regions, and paganism to those farther south and along the coastal regions. At one time, Islam was a prosperous religion that brought ignorant peoples out of the darkness of paganism. Although I am in no way an advocate of Islam, being an Atheist, this religion was much more beneficial to human beings than Christianity; until fairly recently. I can say nothing positive about paganism; there has been no positive outcome whatsoever. That is one reason I’m against Christianity no matter who is involved. What it was that attracted blacks to Christianity though is a profound mystery to me. Undoubtedly one of the most pathetically stupid religions that I have ever studied is Christianity; stuped in bigotry, bloody violence, incest, murder, and mythology. My only guess to this embracement by the slaves to this detestable religion is that it was the religion of their masters. What the slave holders believed, therefore I should believe also, thereby possibly making my slave experience slightly easier, was the thought I suppose. Ironically, the slave owners at first didn’t want their human stock to learn to read at all, especially the Bible. With literacy comes reading, and with reading comes knowledge. Nevertheless, somehow it was determined that by teaching the Bible fallacies to the slaves, a level of unprecedented ignorance could be attained. With teaching the stupidity and ignorance of the Bible, fear could be instilled in the slaves which would bring more of an acceptance of their miserable circumstance. A good slave would dutifully carry out his work, believing that no matter how bad the present was, there was a reward in heaven. The “reward” as some ignorant white Christians have said, is being able to serve their masters in heaven. My goodness! If there was such a thing, I’d rather spend an eternity in hell. Another benefit of the turnaround in Christian teaching to the slaves was that now the slave could identify with the story of the Jewish slaves in Egypt. The story of the 400 years in bondage in Egypt was juxtaposed with the 400 years bondage in America. When you died in slavery, you were now “crossing the River Jordan” and all of that hooey as the Jews supposedly did in reaching the “Promised Land;” being what is now Israel. I will come up to date in modern times, but before I do, I will excuse the slaves, with the exception of some of my childhood heroes as Nat Turner and Harriet Tubman, as fearful and ignorant, which was how they were so easily controlled. But how can black people of today still be under the ignorant spell of Christianity? Christianity has done virtually nothing for the black community. With poverty, drugs, broken families, self-hate and many other influences straight out of the pit running rampant in the black community, I just cannot fathom the clinging to this religion. Christianity has taught hate, bigotry and self-worthlessness down through the ages; especially to the “heathen,” which black people are supposedly among. I’ll never forget the time that some stupid white southern Baptists came knocking on our door in a campaign in my neighborhood to, “bring the teachings of Christ to the heathen.” I was no more than the age of five, and my brother was seven when this occurred. They painted a rosy picture to my mother of how we would learn the Bible and have fun doing it every Sunday. Well, as it turned out, the black kids were segregated to the basement while the white kids were taught upstairs. My mother being somewhat of a rebel herself, even though being raised in a strict Christian home as a child, after learning of this, immediately pulled us out. These clowns who were constantly relegating darkness as evil and brightness as pure and good. These bozos who taught that the black race came from monkeys and the white race came from a white god with a Jewish carpenter son. The black churches, especially of today are no better. They are rampant with ignorance and evil. Backbiting, thievery, adultery, jealousy, envy, greed, and pettiness run rampant. This segregation still goes on today. Sunday is the most segregated day of the week. No other religion is as segregated. Even if Christianity were true, and even though half of the poor situation within the black community is the responsibility of black people, why would this evidently biased god be worshipped? I say that black people need to abandon wholly the fallacies of Christianity and embrace the reality of self worth and self love. Black people need to embrace science and math. With a search for truth comes knowledge. With knowledge, comes self worth, confidence, freedom, financial responsibility and happiness. As I alluded to before. Even if the Christian belief system was true; I would rather spend an eternity in hell than to spend one moment in the presence of Jerry Falwell. ------------ About the author Brian E.
