Political Courage

By Michelle Malsbury
Mar. 23, 2007

I was not familiar with John Edwards until he was running mate with John Kerry during the 2004 presidential election. I liked him them and I like him even more now. He appeared genuine and sincere. He portrayed a man who emerged from humble beginnings to become a person of education, wealth, and stature. Everything has not always been roses for the Edwardses. John and his family have seen their share of tragedy with the death of their teenage son and Elizabeth’s battle with breast cancer during that campaign.

Yesterday every media was scrambling to tell another sad story about John Edwards’ wife Elizabeth. A day or so ago Elizabeth was in pain and went to her doctor to see what might be amiss. It was discovered then that her cancer has moved into the bone and perhaps some other locations. Predictions from her doctor this time around tell that this latest cancer, which is a stage four, is not curable, as her breast cancer was, yet it is treatable. Once the extent of her cancer is determined a treatment plan will be developed and evaluated at regular intervals to determine how best to continue. This may be a long and arduous road. Treatment depends on many factors of which a positive mental attitude and hope can make the most difference of all.

From press statements made in person by John and Elizabeth Edwards on camera it appears that despite this setback they will continue their campaign toward the presidency in 2008. She candidly said, “I do not look sick. I do not feel sick.” John stood at her side smiling lovingly, both offering unspoken encouragement to the other. Together they exuded confidence, hope, and sincerity. I applaud their courage as I am sure this was not an easy decision to make. The only consideration came from John stating that “anytime, any place Elizabeth needed him he will be there”.

My best wishes for a successful recovery rest with both, John and Elizabeth. For more information about the candidate John Edwards and his stances on the issues log onto the web site http://johnedwards.com.
