We’ve Seen Our Enemies And They Are Us

By Ken Hughes
Mar. 17, 2007

When is it the time to look in the mirror and face our enemy? I just read Mark Gilberts article in reference to Wal Mart sticking it to America, [and now the rest of the world.] As I read his assessment of Wal Mart I kept thinking “Right on Mark” I haven’t ever shopped at Wal Mart so I could understand his frustration. Then the question came to me who’re Wal Marts facilitators. If the public didn’t shop [in droves] at Wal Mart would there be a Wal Mart? The answer is no there would not.

I’m sure Mr. Gilberts suggestion we all shoplift at Wal Mart was more in jest than actually shoplifting. Anyway it wouldn’t prove much of a point those who’d actually take the suggestion seriously are in the minority. I have a better suggestion don’t shop at Wal Mart period there’s an action Wal Mart could understand. Without the American consumer there is no Wal Mart.

As for the treatment of their employees, no one compiles them to seek work at Wal Mart. Wal Marts prevailing wage is above that of their next competitor. Wal Mart, Home Depot and Lowe’s all start employees at a higher wage than K-Mart and 7-11, BP and Citgo convince stores. There’s an attack on Wal Mart and it’s driven by politics. If there were no Wal Mart perhaps the public would be shopping at Almacenes Grandes Nacionales de Venezuela. Hugo Chives, Propietario. or some other foreign owned establishments. We know putting Wal Mart out of business isn’t going to do much to curb the public’s appetite for cheap imported goods. Cheap is as inherent in the American physicy as popcorn and soda pop,

Granted Wal Mart employees aren’t paid on an equal scale with a Union automobile workers. These days there are a lot of unemployed Union automobile workers applying at Wal Mart for those low paying jobs. There’re some truths to be considered before demands are placed on businesses to pay employees what they want and not what the traffic will bare. There’s a direct correlation between the wholesale cost of goods labor costs and the price we pay for those goods. By the way there is a third partner in all this governments, federal, state and municipal all have their hands out extracting their share of the profits before the stock holding public ever sees a dime in their retirement funds.

You see Mr. Gilbert it isn’t as easy as shoplifting items costing less than $ 25.00 from your local Wal Mart stores. It actually depends on what consumers are willing to pay for their purchase that makes the difference. If we demand cheap then cheap follows the path back to the Oil Well that produces the chemicals use to manufacture all that cheap plastic crap we’re spending our hard earned wages on.

Bureaucrat’s not the president negotiates the deals that are made with foreign companies [Governments] congress approves them and president sign on to them. It’s a vast conspiracy that usually ends up costing the American public two arms and one leg. Bureaucracies usually remain silent and let congress do all the talking usually blaming the president that’s because 535 members of congress are debating pro and con and by the time each one has had their say we the public long ago stopped listening and caring.

Those brilliant men [the founding fathers] who gathered to establish this greatest of all nations may not even have known how profound their decisions would eventually become. “Out of cause comes arbitration out of arbitration comes delay out of delay comes sound judgment from sound judgment cause is avoided.” Did the founding fathers know that or did they simply feel it. My friends before we allow Wal Mart to assume the burdens of Labor Unions and Government’s failure to act responsibly lets make some changes at the ballot box.

This article in no way discredits Mark Gilbert’s article or his beliefs. If I’m not mistaken his message was “there are some inequities that need our attention”. We simply disagree on what they are and who’s responsible not that they’re not out there.

Term limits for both houses of congress are in order. Term limits would cure a multitude of sins and send a multitude of sinners home.
