![]() By Ken Hughes Mar. 12, 2007 With each election the litmus bar goes a little higher or lower depending on your own moral standards. The candidates tell us there shouldn’t be litmus tests for political office, we know better. There are always cretin standards the candidate must live up to. Things the candidate should not would not and could not do but do any way. Let’s start with fidelity [all those who’ve been unfaithful please leave the room] Ok Ms. Voter now it’s just you and me. Do you believe a candidate should be in a magnums relationship to serves as president? Don’t leave we were just getting started. What do you mean you didn’t understand the word fidelity and you don’t know what magnums means? It’s no longer acceptable for a candidate to have a relative who has an alcohol or drug problem, Barack Obama has raised the bubble by admitting he was addicted to drugs in High School. You can bet your brothers crack pipe all the candidates will confess they’ve tried drugs at one time or another or have a problem with alcohol, one mans sin can be the next mans savior. Abortion is still the sticky wicket in all political campaigns. It’s not enough to be both for and against abortion no matter how convoluted the explanations are. Any candidate that stands up and says abortion is just another form of birth control is toast. They use such catch phrases as “in cases of incest and rape,” please spare me this one that excuse doesn’t even show as a rating on the charts. The simple fact is in this politically correct world women have rights fetuses don’t. Global warming is one of the hot issues in the coming campaign and it’s probably the safest issue for a candidate to lie about. Anyone with any knowledge knows man neither causes nor cures such complex issues as global conditions. There are some things that are beyond the scope of mans understanding and ability to control. To predict the future we first must analyze the past, what happened and how did it happen and above all how long did it take? Man can’t predict today’s weather accurately how will they predict a decade or more into the future There’s the issue of religion and that’s never safe territory to tread in. Too many areas of the country are still heavily religious. To be against God is unsafe to say the least. Liberals distain for the deity is well known the question how deep seated is it many have voiced their negative opinions about a God then go behind closed doors and beg the Lord for forgiveness. Two of the Democratic front runners have openly pledged their obedience to Jesus if he will just grant them the privilege of becoming president. Republicans have always been open about their religion and on accusation have been criticized for their beliefs. There are few safe havens to disrespect when it comes to political campaigning religion isn’t one of them The story goes Lyndon Johnson’s in his early political career accused an opponent of being an “Openly practicing Heterosexual” needless to say his opponent lost the election. That was South Texas and it probably wouldn’t have the same effect in a national election. There are equally ridiculous accusations that are attached to candidates that do take a toll on the candidate’s ability to get their message out and be falsely judged by the voters. The best a candidate can hope for now are positive headlines and the sound bits the media is willing to put out. Even then the sound bit is more likely than not to be about an allegation an opponent made and not something the candidates themselves said. Electing a president in the 18th and early 19th century was a much simpler task. A keg of whisky with the candidates name on it at the front door of the polling stations was the extent of many presidential campaigns. Electing presidents has become a billion dollar year around endeavor. One of our presidential candidates began campaigning the day she moved out of the Whitehouse over 6 years ago. We would like to make election campaigns shorter and less abrasive. There’s a problem with tinkering with election laws. Every time congress tries it they further restrict the rights of the voters they never think to place any of the burdens of election reform on them selves. McCain Feingold is a classic example of how the courts and congress shouldn’t have been allowed to do exactly what they intended to undo put more money into campaigning. The solution to better government is term limits, 12 years for both houses of congress the same as the president’s restricted from over indulging in the process ------------ About the author: Ken Hughes is a retired businessman, who’s traveled extensively, observed much and learned much.
