Talking With Iran Will Not Bring Peace To Iraq

By Craig Chamberlain
Mar. 12, 2007

There have always been appeasers in history. Men and women who believe that the easiest way to have peace is to give the bully everything they want. It’s no different today, there are many voices all over the world that believe that if we would only sit down and talk with the Islamic Fascists we could overcome our differences and live in peace

In ancient Greece, there were Athenians who believed that they should sell out their city, and end their democracy simply to avoid conflict with Sparta. In America, before and during the civil war, there were northerners who believed that the best way to keep the union together was to cave into southern demands. Men like Lewis Cass, James Buchanan, Franklin Pierce, Millard Fillmore, and many more were known as dough faces. They believed that giving the south everything it demanded would keep the southern states in the country.

During the war there were the copperheads. These were northern politicians that believed that the south was right, and that their treason and secession should not be impeded by the federal government. Northern appeasement did not keep the southern states in the United States, and the copperheads were not able to allow their appeasement to become government policy, thankfully.

The most famous case of appeasement of all was Neville Chamberlain, and his kowtowing to Adolf Hitler. Like all appeasers Chamberlain believed that if Hitler were given everything he wanted he would spare Europe another war. Hitler was able to claim the Rhineland, Austria, and Czechoslovakia with British and French cooperation, and Europe was not spared from the blitzkrieg.

Now with regards to Iran we have people(think of Richard Armitage, he once called Iran a democracy) who think that dialogue, any dialogue, with Iran is the only way out of Iraq. Now, here’s the problem with talking to Iran: they’re crazy. Ok, that might be a bit of an oversimplification but it basically holds true. Iran is not a country ruled by normal, or rational, men. They don’t want anything except our destruction. For them this is a Jihad against the Great Satan, they might sit down and talk, but it doesn’t mean anything. For them negotiation is a stall tactic. They talk and talk, and all the while they are still subverting Iraq.

Their official ideology says that there can be no peace with the United States. Talking with them only strengthens their hand. It gives them time to wreak more havoc in Iraq, and it gives them legitimacy. The rest of the world has been appeasing the mullahs ever since they came to power, and it has earned them nothing but the contempt of the Iranian leaders.

Iran can’t be talked to, or negotiated with. We’re not talking about a trade deal, or a military alliance. We’re talking about the fate of a nation. A nation that Iran is determined to destroy, or control it from Tehran. Negotiating makes us look weak. It makes us look like were trapped and the only way out is to beg the Iranians for help. This makes them look strong.

Meeting with Syria and Iran in Baghdad won’t produce the peace that we are looking for. It is folly for the government to try to engage regimes that have an implacable hatred for us. The Presidents time would be better served having General Petreaus leading the troops to victory on the battlefield. Our enemies can’t be trusted, or their promises believed. We can gain nothing at the bargaining table except the contempt of Fascist regimes who believe that we are getting ready to cave in. Victory is the only way to bring peace to Iraq.
