Mar. 12, 2007 Jehovah God is good from every stretch of imagination humanly possible. From whatever pedestal one tries to look at it or appraise it it's beyond reasonable argument that God loves us all having created us in His own image. His love for us is greater in scope and magnitude than the love our mother and father showered on us when they begot us. Or the one we show to our wives, brothers and sisters or friends. A radical new-generation pastor (names withheld) once shocked his congregation (this author inclusive) in a packed Sunday service the other day in Lagos when he postulated that "God is a dictator!" But before the congregation went for the pastor's head for speaking heresy the man of God continued: "The dictatorship of God however is a righteous one unlike what we have today being played as politics by mere mortals who dictate unrighteously". The pastor drew a sharp line between the infinite 'dictatorship' of God and that of man arguing forcefully that whereas the former exercises universal sovereignty doing justice at all times to all men irrespective of colour, creed and status in life the latter in his small world does the exact opposite using crude injustice, wickedness, unfairness, divide and rule and tricks and lies as deadly weapons of command and control. In the Bible one of my best lines is found in Psalms 23 which I read every morning and night in praising God. An ancient writer of repute penned down a great line in extolling the great virtue of God when he declared: "I shall laud you always oh Lord my God for in a fear-inspiring way I was wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful as my soul is well aware!" Appraising therefore the infinite 'dictatorship' of God finds cogent reason in His wonderful creation. And dominion over affairs of His subjects. And global recognition of His existence by men and women calling on Him in both moments of joy and difficulty for His grace, glory, authority, miracle and power. While in Nigeria few weeks back on a brief visit I worshipped on a Sunday in Port Harcourt Rivers State capital in a church called "Sureword Outreach" situated off Ikwerre Road in the garden city. The pastor, a woman whose interpretation of the Gospel and the wonderful renditions of the church choir kept me spellbound and dancing for hours, gave a testimony that really gave glory to the true God. According to Madam Eunice Enujuba, a member of her church was contracted by an enemy or a devil incarnate to kill her and her husband. The man in his car on the mission was coming directly opposite her and her husband in their own car. The man's aim was to crush them in a head-on collision but as his car was fast approaching it's target something pushed the steering away from it's natural course and the driver found himself in the hospital later having hit the vehicle somewhere far from his intended target. Pastor Enujuba told us that as the man and his vehicle were coming their direction she was rejoicing in their car praising high His name. The man later came to confess his sin asking the pastor to forgive and pray for him. Miracles abound in the world of how the Almighty intervenes (sometimes at the nick of time) to save His children from the evil schemings of Satan and his human agents. Halleluyah! When I was walking through the valley of the shadow of death God saved me at the eleventh hour when all hope was lost. It was a moment of anguish and frustration! So I owe Him confession and testimony as long as I live. The story will be told in full in my autobiography in due course. If you go to church you will hear miracles and see miracles. You will hear testimonies of how God heal people from AIDS; how He turned water into blood and how He got water from stone literally speaking. The Bible is replete with the great miraculous deeds of Jesus Christ, His only begotten son sent down to salvage mankind, on earth. Where do we begin?: raising Lazarus from death or turning water into wine; feeding thousands with just five loaves of bread and two fishes or healing the woman with the issue of blood; walking on water or causing Jonah to suffer for three days in a fish's belly for refusing to answer His call; healing the blind Balthimus or healing the lepers. Where does one begin to appraise the infinite dominance of our Creator in our lives in spite of our manifest sins and inhuman acts? My brother's daughter's name is "Mmesoma-chineke" which literally means 'good deeds of God'. What God did in his life and family is the reason he gave that name to his daughter. God admonished us in His ten commandments never to have any other god before Him; He equally made it clear that we must not owe allegiance to any other god but Him alone. In the ten commandments in fact God read the riot acts to us leaving no room for complacency or divided loyalty. You either serve Him or never! In spite of the efforts of atheists to play down the existence of God questioning His abode or relevance in today's jet age majority of humanity believes in the existence of a Giver of life in His throne far beyond reach and comprehension. God is a spirit and His ways are not our ways. He made it clear that the entire wisdom of man is foolishness before Him; He's all powerful and all-knowing! He made us to understand Him better through the Bible saying categorically that man's thousand years is just a day in His divine celestial clock. God revealed Himself in the Bible dealing with recalcitrant ancient Kings like Nebuchadnezzer whom He sent to the wilderness to become a wild beast for years as a punishment for disloyalty. God knows how to take His pound of flesh; He can allow you years to continue in your wicked evil ways but the end may be bitter. That is why the same Bible teaches us that "better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof". God may be labelled a 'dictator' but He dictates with unassaillable justice and equity. Unlike today's tin-pot dictators that litter the African political firmament, little men of little minds, God administers our world with supreme unique cosmic power and unchallengable wisdom. He remains what He is and never changes as the Bible says of Him: "I am what I am, I changeth not!" To Him one can conveniently say without mincing words: Jehovah, Kabiyesi, Eze-uwa, Onyekereuwa! May your kingdom come and may your supreme 'dictatorship' reign forever, oh veritable King of the Universe!!
