Mar. 10, 2007 Henry A. Waxman, a US representative from California's 30th district, which includes Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and parts of west Los Angeles, was elected chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on January 4 of this year. He has announced that his committee will hold hearings to determine whether the White House followed appropriate procedures in safeguarding the undercover identity of Valerie Plame. This comes as a consequence of the recent conviction of I. Lewis Libby for perjury and obstruction of justice. Waxman is another of those liars who claims that he was misled by Bush's misrepresentations on intelligence in the run-up to the war in Iraq, and that this was his reason for voting in favor of the invasion. However, Waxman's district is heavily Jewish and can be expected to be pro-Israel, anti-Islam at every juncture. Waxman is himself Jewish, and has made privately funded trips to Israel. I, for one, believe that a man with Waxman's background would have been very much in favor of invading Iraq, but now that the war has grown more unpopular, he is attempting lamely to exculpate himself for his complicity in the misbegotten adventure. And even if he personally had been impartial enough to be reluctant to help instigate the bloodbath, as an experienced politician he would have had to have some regard for the people who put him in office. What do you suppose they think in Beverly Hills? Therefore, it would be unrealistic to expect Waxman's committee to have as its ulterior motive the revelation of the true reason for the war, to wit, the protection of Israel. Instead, he is merely using Plamegate as a trumpery partisan gimmick. He is seeking only to score a few points against the opposition party. Anyone, looking hopefully in his direction for significant action in the matter of revealing and requiting the misdeeds of the White House and Congress can probably expect to be left in the lurch, just as he or she has been left in the lurch again and again in all these hearings and investigations, which seldom do more than restate the obvious. Not only does Waxman not own up magnanimously to the Israeli participation in engineering the war, accepting part of the blame on their behalf, but he bristles with indignation when someone else does. People like Moran, Mearsheimer and Walt, President Carter, Scott Ritter and others who blame Israel and Jewry at large for much of the chaos in the Middle East do not find a sympathetic audience in Waxman. His squealing and whining about the intelligence failures that led to the war are just partisan rhetoric unfortunately. Perhaps also he's trying to look good before the public, as if he some kind of vigilante keeping track of the outlaws in the White House. I've been following Waxman's comments on the war since it began, and though at one time I thought that he might have been getting ready to start a real investigation, it looks as if this was all a mere pantomime. He lives in or around Beverly Hills.
