This Memoir Will Contain My Actual Name

By Argile Stox
Mar. 5, 2006

Hello, my name is Gary Rogers. I have retired the pen-name Argile Stox; for that was the last vestiges of the stink that PublishAmerica had bestowed upon me. The name change also frees me up to let the real me shine through. It was not an easy decision. I had discussed retiring Argile Stox with Tracy Sutterer on and off for the past three months. Since I am currently rewriting my memoirs under my actual name, it is only fitting that I retire my former pen-name. The memoir will contain my actual name; however, all the characters mentioned in the book will be a composite of actual people.

The name Argile Stox had served me well for about three years. Yet, I felt that in order to divest myself completely of PublishAmerica, I would have to use my actual name. I have seen some books come out lately – “John Doe writing as Harry Smith.” Well, I guess that is OK. If that individual wants to transfer the fame and glory from Harry Smith to John Doe – that is all well and good. In my case, since the name Argile Stox will always be associated with PublishAmerica – I felt that in order to make a complete and clean break from PublishAmerica it would be only fitting to use my actual name.

Using a pen-name is very comfortable. It is a sort of imaginary brick wall which protects an author’s actual name. I believe the word would be: incognito. I had originally used the pen-name as a “test”. If my memoir had tanked, my good name would still be intact and not tainted by the lead balloon book containing my actual name.

As veteran readers of this forum are aware, there has been a continuing conflict between this writer and PublishAmerica. That conflict thankfully has concluded in my favor. But yet, PublishAmerica still promotes my out of print book on their “Author Profiles” page, concealed in their “Press-Room” on one of the pages of their website.

As it is commonly known, PublishAmerica demands that all correspondence be handled only through e-mail. Last week, on the basis that my book is out of print and that my contract has been canceled, I asked that my book and quote be removed from the Author’s Profile’s Page. In the text of my e-mail, I gave them seven business days from the receipt of the e-mail to remove the offending image and quotes. I also indicated that I will have no compunction to advise the Federal Trade Commission regarding this matter under the Truth in Advertising Act.

I have in my possession all of the evidence regarding PublishAmerica and the complaint I made to the New York State Atty. General’s office, Internet Fraud Division. They have an open file on PublishAmerica –and are collecting complaints from New York City and New York State PublishAmerica author complaints. The investigation is open and active. I was assured by the Atty. General of New York State , that if enough complaints about PublishAmerica begin to accumulate, they will overrule Baltimore ’s Attorney General –and haul PublishAmerica and their lawyers into New York State Supreme Court.

It really fires me up that I am no longer associated with PublishAmerica, and they are still advertising my book (which is out of print) and my quotes. It has been over one year since my contract was canceled. I absolutely have no ties that bind me to PublishAmerica. I would think that out of 20,000 signed authors, that they would replace my book and quotes from that page. Is it out of spite? I really don’t know. I will keep this forum up to date as to the resolution of this matter.

Otherwise, the rewrite of my memoir is progressing at a snail’s pace. I have completed 10 pages of rewritten material. It took two arduous days to complete that task. Originally, the book was 325 pages long. Can you imagine how long it is going to take me to rewrite and add information to another 315 pages? It took a one year, and three pages of single spaced corrections to put the final touches on the original manuscript –which was converted into a final draft PDF document.

I recently purchased a conversion program. It converts a PDF document back into a Microsoft Word document. This turned out to be a real nightmare. The conversion went smoothly. Yet, all of the tabs have to be reset. Information has to be deleted and more information added. When I am involved in rewriting the manuscript, time has no significance. I forget to eat and sleep. It is a very exhausting process to revisit and rewrite a manuscript that you had hoped that your eyes and fingers would not touch or look at, again. I will keep this forum advised as to my progress.
