Is America Ready For A Third Party?

By Ken Hughes
Mar. 4, 2007

At least once a week I receive an e-mail from something called the Constitution Party. They’re promoting a third political party, there are several alternate third parties now and none seem to be able to compete with the two predominant national political parties.

There’re good reasons these well meaning parties never gain any real traction. The Bureaucracy the Lobbyists and the Media must be behind or at least willing to recognize any third party as ligament and not just a fluke. If any party hopes to survive it need a strong supporting base and that isn’t likely to happen.

For the most part the public’s politically complacent and the politically active are in the minority. Granted if they do get any of the Medias attention they just don’t seem to ignite support from the potential voters. Having lived through 20 presidential elections I can attest the voter’s interest in politics is short lived. About the best any candidate can expect from the public as a whole is the two to three months prior to the election. Political apathy is the greatest deterrent to a third party having any chances of succeeding.

In the early years of the Republic there was an assortment of political party’s. Around the turn of the century [19th] political parties began to evolve into two opposing ideologies, The Federalist Party of Alexander Hamilton and the Democratic Republican Party of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In a few years the Federalist Party collapsed and was replaced by the Whig Party which in turn collapsed and the present Republican Party was formed around the party’s not making it. In the mid 1800’s the two party systems evolved ….. In no way is this meant to chronicle the history of political party’s it’s merely an indication of how events developed over the years

In the beginning the Federalist Party represented the land owners and businessmen, the Democratic - Republican Party represented the “Little Man” and that’s been the perception ever since. However there’re a number of holes in this argument. Republicans saved the nation from separation, abolished slavery. One hundred years later Republicans gave meaning to the emancipation proclamation by enacting and enforcing civil rights legislation. Republicans gave Black America a voice and as usual the Democratic Party took credit and ran with it.

A third party has nothing to entice voters to join them all the important issues are split between the two exiting party’s. Democrats are the can’t do party and Republicans are the can do party. There’s no room in the center for a maybe party. Democrats spread despair and disillusionment. It’s their belief the public isn’t capable of self motivation. It’s the Democrats position without a government program behind each individual they’re destined to fail. Democrats blame the wealthy for any ills the country may suffer by stealing tax money that rightfully belongs to poor [i.e.] government.

Republicans have always been the party of less government and more the individual. Conservative Republicans look back at the accomplishment of the Greatest Generation and pray for the opportunity to extend their good works into the 21st century. This nations wasn’t built on welfare or coddling a class of unmotivated freeloaders. What’s left for a third party the bottom of the barrel belongs to the Democrats and the top of the heap belongs to Republicans? There’s little in between to entice voters to join a third party.

For those who live and breathe politics 24 / 7 we can understand their frustrations believing there’s a better way and seeing it stiffed is a frustration to a thinking person. Fortunately the founding fathers realizing what brilliant men could accomplish set down a list of rules [the constitution] prohibiting these brilliant men from wrestling away the rights of the common man for the greater good. The greater good is a phrase we hear a lot from Democrats, it usually means support for the unmotivated restricting the rights of the public and votes for them. Rewarding the lazy only creates more lazy people. Taking way the rights of the public for the greater good will eventually come back to haunt them.

There’s far to much greater good in American politics and not nearly enough self motivation self respect and self reliance, what would Benjamin Franklin think?
