Jun. 30, 2007 This new contest has a few people irked, Ed. Kaycee sent me a note saying she'd never even so much as contact anyone associated with the site again and will ask Matt to take that article down as well as contact her lawyer, etc. You know I love you, lol, but I gotta agree with her and Tom on this. I've already told you what I think--having more contests is a great idea, and people really like them, but this isn't the way to go about it. There are too many hot-headed egos at this place. People are here because they want a public blog, or they want to show off their knowledge and ability, or to persuade people into changing their views, or to promote and sell themselves. These aren't the kind of people who like to have their work tampered with. You know I'm a free speech nut, but I really think this crosses the line just a tad too much. People can effectively already bash each other, even very directly by quoting the entire contents of the articles that they are bashing. But to post something someone else wrote and change it as if they had written it, even if it's obvious that they didn't, just goes too far, IMO. And this contest that asks people do that is just asking for trouble... Look, I like a good debate, even a heated one, as you know. If someone wants to take me on in a point for point, or word for word debate, I'm game. But I wouldn't much like it if they sacked something I wrote, say, changing a link to NASA to point to a UFO conspiracy website or something, or a link to WikiPedia to a site about Hellfire. We're just human, obviously, and I know what it's like to want to get back at people when they attack you in the forum. What I'm getting at is that I can't help but suppose that maybe, just maybe, part of you is using your forum angst and your Editor-power to get back at these people, lol? Hey, it's FUN. I'd have enjoyed doing something like that to Hughes back in the day, say, when we were at each other. Or, it would be fun to play games with koolaid using my forum power. But I never did. I never deleted anything that utter and complete baboon said about me (although now that the new rules are in play, many of those old posts really ought to go - including MANY written by me). I think you ought to transition back to being an impartial observer, like a deistic god that doesn't care one way or the other. There has to be a way that you can back out gracefully. Perhaps write a short article saying that since so many people objected to the new contest and told you that they would not participate, that you've decided to change the rules a tad or something like that. Anyway, Ed, you know I like you. I consider you an e-friend, etc., lol, and I like the site. But I gotta tell you, that I can't participate in this one. I couldn't if I wanted too, not after my forum post where I disagreed with the fact that Ed went openly biased, etc, You told me that you had Brooks Mick considering making a comeback, etc., I doubt that this kind of contest will persuade him, ya know? Let me know what think about this, and hopefully, you'll consider changing this one. I don't have any plans to leave or anything if you don't change it, don't worry about that, but I might write an article expressing my dislike of the affair - just like you invited me to do about Pain. ------------ About the author Frederick Smith: I enjoy writing about the positive virtues of humanism - humanists are the good guys. I now have a blog that I will start to increasingly maintain and update. About my personal background and life: I was born, I got some education, worked, ate, and had some kids. It seems I like to write something that was unknown to me until relatively recently... How's that for detail? ;) Hate mail is welcome unless you are from the Army Of God. Please! It's not that I mind seeing pictures of aborted fetuses in my inbox, but once you've seen one you've pretty much seen them all...
