Jun. 19, 2007 Every time I turn on the television and tune into any news station I hear something about President Bush, the current White House Administration, or their staff. Many top aides have taken the fall for their bosses or just quietly resigned. Sure politics is all about paying back your supporters, but this Administration has taken that payback to unprecedented levels. The buck should stop here with the limiting of contributions taken for any given political office or evening the playing field by handing all candidates the same amount of monies to run for their various offices. Lobbyists and special interest groups should not exist or fade into the sunset instead of influencing how laws are created for the rest of us. FOX caters to the right and thus somehow finds support for what most educated people would term a lame duck president. MNNBC and CNN news more or less use the same rhetoric portraying this Administration as one that lacks vision, adheres to cover-ups, or believes they are all above the laws of the United States because of the offices they hold. Whomever we listen too it is apparent that this Administration should have had a vision in order to see their dreams become a reality, but alas they did not. This Administration was handed the oval office and punted thereafter. They never had a plan or a vision because they never truly won! Where do we go from here? Congress needs to keep digging and unearthing the dirt that the Bush Administration has swept so cleverly under the carpeting in the oval office. This Administration needs to own up to their mistakes and begin to take measures to correct them or get out! Owning up means taking responsibility and not passing the buck. Owning up means being honest and not hiding behind executive priviledge. Owning up means handing over all 88 e-mails and not deleting them to circumvent the laws set forth for all presidents. Owning up means being honest about firing people who disagree with you or will not do your dirty work. Can they do it? I honestly doubt it which leaves congress with no alternative except to impeach them all and start off with a clean, fresh, slate based on trust and honesty. The people of the United States spoke loud and clear this past November and Congress has yet to see that request to fruition. By the time 2008 rolls around they may come to regret that mistake. Specifically, why can't they pass some legislation that stops this frivolous war in Iraq and brings our troops back home? Why can't they quit frittering away time on an immigration bill that does nothing to secure our ports, borders, air terminals, and railways? Why can't they unite for these common causes? As the time for the 2008 elections draws ever near Congress better take the words of the American public to heart if they wish to garner those precious votes and retain their seats. In the coming months it is the job of those running for president or congressional seats in 2008 to show the people of the United States that they can make the changes we voted for in the mid-terms. Show us that they deserve the trust we placed in them that past November. How can they show us? Winning always begins with a vision. This vision is what each person is, where they are going, and how they intend to get there. Visions give direction and ensure performance. Visions translate dreams and hopes into reality, they touch the hearts and spirits of supporters making them want to take part in this plan. Visions go hand in hand with good and capable leadership, which is something that has been noticeably missing in the Bush Administration. Can congress lead? Can any of those presidential hopefuls show us that they deserve our trust and vote? Time will tell, but until then I suggest that we, the people, unite in our cause to see this war with Iraq come to a close now and to work toward transparency in government that ensures we are all on the same page. The time to act is NOW. Call or write your local and state representatives telling them that we deserve better! ------------ About the author: Michelle Malsbury was born and raised in Champaign, Illinois.
