![]() By Kaycee Nilson Jun. 11, 2006 Recently we had a “Yard Sale” to try to ease the load of items we have to move over 900 miles to our new home. It was a hot, sweaty, bug biting, long two days, but we managed to lighten our load somewhat. The best salesman we had on our team was our five-year-old son. He would walk customers and potential customers through our backyard, and point out his suggestions for purchases. He sold a ton of CD’s and even the baby crib that we had held onto, because I said that if we sold it, I would end up pregnant the minute it was gone. He even sold some of his toys that he had out-grown to smaller children that accompanied their parents to our yard sale. My husband and I joked amongst ourselves that we had a car salesman in the making! My oldest son had the great idea of taking sidewalk chalk and writing on the sidewalk near high traffic areas (such as the subway stations near our home) with the details of the sale. I guess it wasn’t enough for him that we had placed a Craig's List ad and distributed 200 flyers throughout the neighborhood. The five-year-old even made money by having a lemonade stand, and sold enough lemonade to make himself $10. He had this stand on Saturday, and that night he bought us dinner (with assistance from Daddy, of course) from McDonalds with his own money. I figured he would have spent his money on toys, or candy, or chips. But that is just the nature of this child. He loves to share with his family. If he gets one of something, say a gumball, he has to have 4 gumballs, to give one to his brother, one to Mom and one to Dad. I guess that the lesson I learned this weekend is that it doesn’t matter how much money you make, it’s the sharing of little things with people that make life matter most. ------------ About the author: Kaycee Nilson has completed her first novel, Night Falls on Chicago.
