Ronald Reagan II: What America Does Not Need

By Guy Arthur Thomas
Jun. 8, 2007

I am a Republican; I loved the 80’s and cherish my memories of “When Ronald Reagan Ruled the World”.  But this is not the 1980’s and Ronald Reagan II is just what America does not need right now.  I realize such statements to some are political blasphemy, so be it but it is true and needs to be said.

When America was being founded Ronald Reagan was not the man to be our first President, it was obviously a far more qualified man, George Washington.  He was the right man at the right time.  When civil war infected our gracious land of the free, whether you like the results or agree with his overall policies, in the end history demonstrates that instead of weakening and becoming two separate countries America survived and the man who performed the thankless job and carried on his shoulders the criticisms (even to this day) of his Presidential decisions and succeeded in helping save our great nation, was Abraham Lincoln.  And when WW2 threatened the civility of much of the world a man with enough conviction and capacity to lead was called into office by his fellow citizens and made the most difficult but necessary decisions a leader must face and did so with inspiration and the unyielding confidence that freedom must be protected.  That man we know simply as FDR.  These are great men for great times and it appears when needed, they arise.

But my friends none of these men were called to do what Harry Truman had to do and did so with the results being celebrated annually but the courage and conviction to make the decision largely ignored.  Yet, he too was the man for the hour and each time needs a man for that time, not yesterday’s man or the man to come.  Understand that as much as we cannot live ignoring today by hoping tomorrow will magically bring a better day, we cannot sacrifice the demands of the present while waxing nostalgic about the good old days and “wouldn’t it be grand if we could just...” it doesn’t work that way.

It works no more than trying to marry your high school sweetheart 35 years later only to discover you have far different needs as does she and each one of you have developed capacities, interests, and concerns completely incompatible with one another.  Or try putting on an outfit that guaranteed you social success 25 years ago.  Maybe you can still fit into it but dated, dusty and cultic might be what stands out more.

Ronald Reagan was indeed a great President but I don’t want Ronald Reagan II or any of his ghosts (I use the plural to represent the many ideas of who Reagan held by many people) and for that matter I wouldn’t resurrect Reagan himself if I could.  He isn’t the man for this hour.  His time came and went and his service to God and man is now a matter of record and indeed wonderful memories to revisit.  But stop living in the past and comparing today to yesterday.

Today’s America doesn’t need Ronald Reagan II but a new kind of leader for new kinds of problems.  This is the way of life my friends.  Life changes and so must we.  We have to move on and look to what is being offered and quit demanding they measure up to a high school sweetheart that was true for then but not today.  We are not the same America with the same problems.  And today we have some very strong men who need not be compared to Ronald Reagan but measured in and of themselves (have you stopped to consider whether RR would sanction such comparisons and the kind of license being assumed with such requirements?).  Men (I neglect to say “and women” because there are no women running for the Republican Party Presidential nomination and this article is focusing on the Republican Party offerings) with achievements, convictions and capacity for national leadership are right in front of us, ready for the America of today.

No more than could Ronald Reagan have been the man for every hour than he is for this hour.  He had his appointed time and served with greatness.  Now is the time for a new kind of leadership for a new kind of America .  My friends, if all you are looking for is Ronald Reagan II and if all you have to measure with is Ronald Reagan “The Original” when considering a candidate, the best you will get in the disappointing end is a ghost that rarely appears.
