Moving 1,100 Miles Back Home

By Kaycee Nilson

Hey everyone!

Sorry I haven’t written in a while, but I have been undergoing a new treatment for my back. So far, it’s not working.

But I have kept my family busy the last month by getting ready to move the household from Chicago, Illinois to Dallas, Texas. This is going to be a culture shock to the youngest child and to Dan. Not to mention our urbanized cat, Stewart.

We won’t actually be living in the city limits, but in a suburb. My Mom’s health is getting worse and no one in the family seems to be helping her. Plus the warmer winters will be easier on my back.
It is going to be great to be near family and friends again. Plus to be able to get items that you cannot find in Chicago, Illinois, but grew up with in Texas such as Mrs. Beard’s bread, Wolf Brand Chili, and Ranch Style Beans.

My greatest joy will to be near my daughter again and to guide her in her life at such an impressionable age she is in.

I have heard of a back operation in which they grow bone on a healthy vertebra and then they scrape it off and fuse it to the broken bone. It has a 99% success rate and not having metal in the back, the risk of rejection and arthritis is virtually 0%. This is being done in a hospital in Dallas, Texas and I am going to see if I qualify for the procedure once I return home on July 1, 2007.

It will bring a sadness to say good-bye to those friends I have made in Chicago and in Wisconsin, but they all understand that family comes first and my Mother needing her daughter to help her is more important than for me to be selfish as my brothers and turn my back on her when she needs family the most in her battle with Alzheimer’s.

I am not going into this with eyes closed. I was witness to her mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s and I am prepared for some of what I am about to face. The hardest part is going to witness the brilliance of a mind deteriorate before our eyes. And I will miss the wit and intelligence of one of Texas’ greatest plant experts. But most of all, I know that at the end, she will not know who I am and how much I love her and how much of an impact she has made on my life. I have tried to live my life in her teachings and tried to raise my kids to the best of my abilities based upon her teachings in child rearing.

You never realize until your parent is diagnosed with such an illness, just how much of an impact they have made upon your life. Even writing this, I realize that she did the best she could to raise 11 children and trying to instill in us not only love for each other as a family, but love for the land as the land will exist after we are gone and our generations live after us.
