Jun. 4, 2007 The lack of personal responsibility today is appalling. Our world, in this country of the US, is shaped by individuals who believe that it is not their fault that they do something. Those individuals believe that a person outside of themselves has taken personal responsibility for what they have done and they have no more responsibility for their actions. People see this in prison conversions. A prisoner finally finds religion, and he is forgiven for unacceptable crimes. Those prisoners also expect the victims to forgive them for their past deeds because of the prisoners finding religion. Politicians also believe in this dogma. Some go as far as saying that it's in their religions name that they do atrocious acts against their fellow man. That is not acceptable. We are a people who needs to take responsibility for our actions. There is no magic pill that controls behavior. It is a false assumption to think that a pill can stop one from acting out in an unacceptable fashion. Many children today are taught that a pill will control their behavior. For some it does. What is that teaching? Religions teach that a deity will take responsibility for bad actions. Parents are teaching that a pill will control the actions of children in a classroom setting. This will teach a child not to take personal responsibility. This means: Personal responsibility is lost. Personally, I would like to see more confessions and penance. I know that will not happen. The people who believe in confession are hated. The people who believe in personal responsibility are called many unsavory names and are forced by the "believers", of lack of personal responsibility, to conversion attempts. It was refreshing to watch candidates in the Democratic Political Debate take responsibility for votes that were made to get this country into the Iraq War. It was not easy. I hope to see more of that kind of character in the political candidates. Hillary made a good debate last night. I also think New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is her biggest competition for the Democratic nomination. He makes her go above and beyond her conventional thinking and that is a great thing to strengthen her as a candidate.
But I left my soap box for a second; without personal
responsibility, the people justify their bad actions.
I hope that will change with more individuals taking
responsibility for their actions and our children are
taught the same.
