Yellow Metal

By Brian Michael Barbeito
Jun. 4, 2007

The newspaper boxes stood there. There were two of them. One was blue and one was yellow. The blue one was light blue, but not as light blue as the sky when it is light blue. The yellow one was bright yellow. The rain there came in bigger drops, and the rain was warm. Sometimes it would splash atop the newspaper boxes for hours during the night. Then it would stop, as if dawn had the authority, and had asked it to leave. There was rainwater left on the top and about, but mostly on the top. Then, of course, if someone took a paper out, the water would move a bit. Car tires make a sound as they cut through the rain left on the ground. About ten feet away was a white concrete divider. It acted as a fence. Now there was the blue box, the yellow box, the black asphalt, and the white concrete fence. There was also black earth, and shrubbery. Along that corridor there were two or three apartments, and they had screen doors that led into areas for shoes and things before you got to the actual door of the apartment. There were cars coming and going, but not too frequently. The brightness of the outside threw you back to yourself. You could listen to music, if you had some sort of music player, but why would you? You could read one of the papers from the paper boxes, but why would you? It would be better to listen to the sounds of the sun, exclaiming brightly. It would be better to watch the raindrops wait on yellow metal.
