Diagonally

They cut the lawn diagonally and also went one way and then the other. Checkered. The place had floodlights, colored lights, track lights, and lights in the cement walls of the pool. The pool itself was not some rectangle or kidney. The pool was more of a maze, and it had every bell and whistle a pool could have. To call it a pool didn’t do it justice, it was more of a creation. The pool was like some sort of a poem. A poem pool it should have been called. It meandered in parts, and got thinner when it did. Other parts led to steps that went to Jacuzzis. All around there were trees and shrubs and flowers. It was all built on a hill, and there was a terrace, and it had durable tables and chairs you could use. With all that and more, it didn’t seem showy, gauche, overdone. Sometimes old money people make things ornate, or at least traditional, and new money people might be worse. This place was money, but you didn’t think of the money. They drove regular vehicles, ate normal food that you could pronounce and usually ate in. All this was just because, just because. Some people like that are like that because they are rural, and there is a term, more specific, called horse people, people that like horses, that keep horses, and are earthy. It wasn’t like that either. In between, the place and the people were. You could talk to them. On the level. Lots of people are hungry. A few people are too well fed. Some others are in a good space. Out in the night, in the distance, two animals could get into a scrap. Could be anything. That’s tough, to listen to that. Ra raw traa aaa shraa! But the fucking lawn would be nice to look at. Neat crisp symmetrical things on the outside must do something nice for the inside of the cranium, and maybe in a way the heart too. On some afternoon someone might open windows where the cool air floats through but with a deliberate pace and of course that there is good sleeping weather. There at the right place someone could be resting, ready to slumber. Outside not so far away would be the lawn that waited, carpeting the earth for an area and a time, cut diagonally.
