The Forever Rockets

By Brian Michael Barbeito
July 31, 2007

Far in the distance rockets shot up through the air and cut through clouds and blue sky until they entered space. There were roads on the earth and there were horses and engines that carried people to the mountains. Orange trees shook because the ground trembled in the time of rockets. Old men chewing petals practiced divination, and looked through records of a different sort. The summers turned cold, and the animals were scarce, frightened. Women in shawls carried blankets and fruit to the ill. Still nights were nights and days were days, with a sun, with a moon. Cold winds from the north came and took many things. Through the troubled times, the rockets could be seen always in the distance. They became a background noise. They became like an old wind, or like the sounds of crickets. Sometimes, a dreamer in the night would awake for some reason, and forget that the troubled times were there, but always the rockets would serve as a reminder. The rockets. The rockets like windy forever crickets.
