Aug. 1, 2007 [Editor's Note: This is the second of many 6th-grade student essays I will be posting in succession. The essays were written in response to a standardized topic prompt: "Tell a story about how you found a box of treasure." The students had two hours to complete their essays, under testing conditions. As this example will prove, some were better than others. On all sides of it were runes that looked like S’s and P’s put together. On the front was a handprint that looked suspiciously familiar. The boy, beckoned once again by curiosity, put his hand on the inlaid print. It fit his hand perfectly. Moments later an eerie screech and blinding light blew the top off the box. Inside were rubies, diamonds, and quartz, in all shapes and sizes. The sides were covered in 100-carat gold, and all was perfect. But suddenly, the sky turned red and a green light could be seen on the horizon.
