July 25, 2007 I have written about the cult of celebrity several times and I have been criticized by some for doing so. I have been told that I shouldn't be wasting my time or the time of the readers here. I have been told that the subject matter is not important nor is it relevant. I disagree. The reason why I focus on people like Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan is because I have a vested interest in who my grandchildren look too as role models and I have a vested interest as an American who wants the country that she lives in to get stronger rather than weaker. Lindsay and her DUI/Drug related arrests are a mirror to what is going on throughout this country both in junior and senior high schools and in colleges. She is merely an example of what goes on every single day to ordinary people who do not have the wealth and fame necessary to buy their way out of taking responsibility for their actions. It's time for not only Lindsay and those of her ilk to take responsibility but for ALL of us to do so as well. Owners of clubs need to stop serving underage children, parents need to pay attention to what their kids are doing and they need to set a decent example of how to live rather than joining in or ignoring the whole process of deterioration that is going on. Lindsay Lohan is a product of a broken family and has substance abuse running throughout her entire existence. Her mother, who is without a doubt, one of the poorest examples of a parent that I have ever seen, should not be allowed to push her other two children onto the same path that Lindsay followed. The creators of Reality Television need to just say NO to people like her when they broker deals to film them with their minor children on a path toward destruction. Lindsay's father Michael, who has served time for several crimes including substance abuse and violent behavior should not be taken seriously or given the time of day by people like Larry King and his producers. He should not be given a public forum to spout his nonsense. The media needs to back off as do the production companies who hire people like Lindsay to make films or endorse their products. The courts need to order COURT supported rehabilitation centers and not those that allow the abuser the freedom to come and go at will and offer them all of the perks that they get at home. How many chances to these people get to clean up their act? It is said that an addict must hit rock bottom before they are willing to get the help that they need in order to stay clean and sober. What will it take for Lindsay Lohan to hit rock bottom? Will she have to injure or kill someone..or herself? People complained that Paris Hilton's sentence was unfair and overly long and that most people guilty of her violations only serve ten percent of a 45 day sentence. Poor Paris had to do half of that sentence and there was an outcry from some that she was punished too severely and that the punishment didn't fit the crime. I beg to differ....Paris has already earned over a million dollars due to the journals that she kept during her time behind bars...no wait, she really wasn't behind bars as most of us think of it. She was by herself in protective custody and she had perks that other prisoners don't get. Her parents skipped the lines at the jail where she was housed when they visited and went to the head of the line to be let in without having to wait like other mere mortals do. She came out to a waiting phalanx of reporters and fans and got several bouquets of flowers upon her exit from the jail. She appeared on the ever-ass kissing Larry King's show to make her case for how she has now changed and then promptly showed up at Les Deux Nightclub to party with her posse. Paris has seen fit to hire a driver when she goes out drinking which most of us can't afford to do, but I doubt that she has changed for the better and that the time she spent in jail made one bit of difference in her life. I expect to hear more about Paris' social life in the near future and I don't expect to hear that she opened that special half-way house for the girls she met (by speaking through vents) while she was in lock-up. Lindsay Lohan is now claiming that the small amount of Coke found on her possession (for the second time), wasn't hers. She was the ONLY one in the car and she was wearing skin tight jeans when she was arrested...how the hell did the coke get into her pocket? This girl is nowhere near rock bottom and I doubt that she has hit that elusive bottom feeding place that would mean that she's ready to get help for her problems. How can she take responsibility for actions that she claims aren't even her fault? How can she be clean if she won't COME clean about what she has been doing? I am sick of the excuse that abusers will relapse many times before they get sober. Who is willing to take the chance of allowing her the opportunity to kill someone before she stops relapsing? It's time for other people to become involved. Not only the justice system but all of the enablers who exploit these so-called "Hollywood bad girls" for profit and their own fifteen minutes of fame that they imagine they are getting for being around them. The SERIOUS media needs to put their stories in perspective and get their priorities straight. Important news should take precedence over stories about party girls gone astray. They should be a mere footnote on the nightly news...if any coverage is given them at all. Anderson Cooper refused to cover the Hilton case and his bosses insisted and gave him an ultimatum....he had to back down. Some shows are devoted to covering nothing but stories about the bad behavior of Hollywood's fallen stars. Larry King is a joke and while he may have been a respected interviewer at one time in the distant past...he is now nothing but a panderer to celebrities that he and his wife socialize with. This is a rant...plain and simple and I am NOT writing it because I am obsessed with Hollywood or anyone connected to that fantasy world. This is a rant from a citizen who has had enough of all of it. I want my voice to be heard by the Courts, the media and most of all by the children who think that these girls are examples to follow and base their own lives on. Enough is enough already. Let Lindsay sink or swim...just get her off of the streets where she can kill someone. Send these spoiled brats to a rehab center that means business and does not allow them to leave whenever they want too, get catered five star meals, yoga sessions, hot tubs and messages. Send them somewhere where the only treatments available are those that address the issues that sent them to rehab in the first place and where their pampered life styles aren't continued on an away from home basis. What message are places like Promises and Wonderland sending? Come here and we will treat you like the self-entitled star that you are? We'll further the fantasy in your head that you have no responsibility for your own actions because you are special and privileged? Lock these idiots up and away from society and keep the rest of us safe from them. Whether it's in a REAL rehabilitation center or a jail...who cares...just stop enabling them to run around like wild animals without concern for the innocent potential victims that they may encounter. ------------ About the author: Meri has a Medical/Legal background and is a former forensic researcher specializing in psychological profiling.
