![]() By Sun Patel July 25, 2007 Dear Editor: This is an open letter to the readers and members of Useless Knowledge. I am writing to you to address three things today. The first thing that I would like to address is in regards to an Articles Section post I had made on July 19, 2007, in the Useless Knowledge Rebuttal Section, the same evening my recipe for my wife, Yasmin's curry, was published on the front page of your website. I kept my post very brief and to the point: it referenced a website my wife and I are in the process of coordinating with our
son, Masud. For some reason, one of your moderators deleted it! May I ask why? I made certain to read the posting rules prior to doing so and dutifully obeyed them. My second reason for writing this open letter to you, is to inquire why someone by the name of Peter Grant would be sending me hateful emails? Who is this person? I thought he was some kind of fictitious character-parody that brought laughs to the site. This was the only reason why I chose his article to play with for my contest entry, as I did not want to make fun of any legitimate writer's work. Is he in fact, actually a real person? Please, Mr. Grant, if I offended you in any way by playing with your article, I am truly sorry. I was only trying to win the tee shirt for Gary Rogers. I beg of you to stop
sending me foul letters. What you are writing about my family is uncalled for. You do not even know us, sir. You are hurting my feelings and I am starting to feel like refraining from writing here again because of all this unnecessary aggravation and stress. You demanded that I tell you where I worked and I have told you in two consecutive emails that I am retired. I do not understand why you would want this personal information or why you expect me to obey your commands. I only want to share healthful recipes with other readers and writers from time to time. I mean you absolutely no harm, Mr. Grant. Please leave me alone. I will not ever again play with one of your articles for any future contests that might come along for the Useless Knowledge writers. My third reason for writing is in regards to an opinion article published yesterday
that deeply troubled me. I read the U-K article by Pat Hurley about "eliminating" people and could not believe what I was reading. At first, I thought it was just crass, low-brow humor from an uninformed blowhard. I soon realized he was serious. How terrible! The very word makes me think of what Adolf Hitler did to innocent people of the Jewish faith because he did not agree with what they believed in, how they looked, and what he believed they stood for. It sounds to me like Mr. Hurley is calling for the same type of thing. No one should have his or her right to free speech "eliminated" nor should a website like this be exclusive to those whom he deems "classy" and acceptable. I thought Useless Knowledge was an inclusive haven for all of mankind? I take issue with his words. I shudder to think what the world would be
like if people like him ran the show! Speaking of shows, I was absolutely TERRIFIED to read that this man was involved with children's programming. No child of mine would ever be permitted to view a show written/hosted by someone who spreads hate-speech! Good God! Doesn't anyone else see how scary that is? We must teach our children tolerance, not "elimination" of those whom we dislike, or in Mr. Hurley's case, I believe he was speaking clearly out of hate. Mr. Hurley, perhaps the only thing that needs to be "eliminated" is your hate and your ego. Thank you for your time. Yours truly,
Sun Patel,
