What's Wrong With Iraq?

By Michelle Malsbury
July 16, 2007

As time marches onward it becomes more apparent to America and the world that the Bush Administration has no idea what to do with Iraq sans their ill-fated invasion in 2003. Even the staunch supporters of Bush during his first term are defecting faster than rats on board a sinking ship. Why such chaos? Leadership is the answer and one that nobody in this Administration is willing to accept.

Leadership begins at the top and flows downward from there. The top leader is supposed to be Bush, but in reality appears to be Cheney, and before that, Rumsfelt. Or maybe it was Rove, the brain of Bush. Whomever it is or was supposed to be is absolutely remiss in their responsibilities with regard to this war in Iraq. The American people have challenged congress to uphold their duty to change the direction that this Administration is bent on taking and still wait for that change to manifest. Congress, little by little, has tried without success to force responsibility onto this Administration and to hold them accountable for this change.

What makes a plan a success or failure depends on leadership, goal setting, and performance measurement. Part of setting forth a plan is selecting responsible and credible leadership that can garner support from those that he or she is challenged to lead. Support is a lot like respect and oftentimes something that must be earned. Once you are able to show people how what they are doing can translate into results by working together you may become a true leader. Iraq has nobody willing to work together to create measurable results. A premise for garnering support is to be honest and let your actions be congruent with your words. Leadership in Iraq has largely been set forth by leaders in the United States will little regard as to how the people of Iraq want to be governed or grow. Unscrupulous US companies profiting from this war have tainted the Iraqi population against America making progress scant in their region. People need consistency and direction in order to grow in their various positions. The lack of direction and utter chaos visible to those on the ground shows that no positive progress is being made. Leadership in America and Iraq has been inconsistent, dishonest, and lacked direction-all of which produce poor results.

There are large differences between good and bad/poor performance and from what I read and see most of the performance in Iraq under any leader has been bad or poor with little or no results to prove otherwise. Look at the facts. The death toll continues to climb. Insurgency is growing faster than anyone can quell. Progress with regard to restoring electric and water to Iraq is at a virtual standstill. Monies spent continue to mount to the tune of $12 Billion dollars per month! At the cost of lives lost and monies spent I would demand some positive results before refusing to change things along this path. However, it has been the opinion of the Bush Administration to spend more money and send more troops into harms way with the express thought that perhaps this mess will go away under the next presidential watch.
