Author's Hell Walk

How hard can publishing a book be?

Answers:

     Cake walk
     Edge walk
     Fire walk
     Hell walk

Pick an option.  I am sure different sets of people will go with different choices.  For instance, well published authors will choose the first option.  They don't have to vie for a mention;  it's the agents who are chasing them.  For authors still trying to establish after the first publication, still trying to find their place, it's the second one.  They can't commit a lot of mistakes.  One good move and everything falls in place.  For somebody who has just published, he sure has a fire walk, with all the criticisms coming in; his peace of mind is surely in tantrums.  It's a sudden elevation to that point where he might not have all the answers.  And for people like me who are waiting for their first publication in two months, it's a HELL WALK.  But sure, I have had my best part, i.e. a cake walk, while actually writing it.

I only used to read veteran authors say that writing is one thing and marketing is another.  It's the latter part that drives one crazy, and that is so much true.  There are hundreds of things that can go wrong.  You are anxious and have bitten your nails to the last visible bit of calcium.  The big issues include the location for launch, who are your guests, and who all are covering it.  Will you actually be able to reach the targeted audience in that frame of time?  Will you end up being a good communicator as an author, or end up on that lousy scrap heap where tons of other authors are cringing with painful memories?  Nobody wants to lose out and neither do I.

The best part:  I have been living in the Himalayas for the last five months, spending my time around the hills, and quite frequently, at heights aggressive enough to demand oxygen cylinders.  I sure had a good time, until I had to return to the main land and start a new job--in outdoor sports, and chase my forthcoming publication, full time.  Working with outdoors sure is fun, unconventional strategies, tie-ups huge sales targets and I sure am enjoying it.  But at the very end, I know I will have cold feet until my book is launched, and I can see the reviews for good or bad.  At least the soul that is so perennially agitated can rest in peace, eventually.

About the author:  Shubham is a globe-trotter who has lived in lots of places.  He graduated from Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, TN, and worked on Wall Street, in NYC.  Now he is into the outdoors as a profession, truly crazy about nature, wilderness and the mountains.  His upcoming book Glian, the Son of Nature will be seen in stores soon.  He can be checked out here.

He is very fond of classic literature, the likes of Charles Dickens, Ruskin Bond, John Steinbeck, and Jack Kerouac.  He bears a special regard for simplicity, nevertheless, he equally adores the works of James Joyce.
