General Petraeus is a 1974
graduate of West Point and graduated in the
top 5% of his class. In 1987 General Petraeus obtained his doctorate from Princeton writing and defending his dissertation on the
topic of war strategies and troop training. He has not secreted his support for
President Bush’s troop increase which can only translate into having
another feather in his cap for his newest posting in Iraq.
Prior to this latest duty in Iraq
General Petraeus did two tours of duty in Iraq back in 2003 as Commander of the
101st Airborne Division doing what he is doing now, training Iraqi
police and military forces to take the reins from our troops in the defense of
their country.
General Petraeus replaced General
George Casey as leader in training Iraqi security and police forces. Some
heralded Petraeus as exactly “what the doctor ordered” while others
saw this change in leadership as more of the same from our leadership in the
White House which has remained optimistic about the dire situation in Iraq
despite information and intelligence to the contrary.
March 2006 the Iraq Study Group
was created to provide some forward looking and positive evaluations of the
situation in Iraq.
Their report was supposed to provide advice, tips, suggestions, or hints that
could help to spin this war as a winnable situation for the United States.
In December of 2006 the Iraq Study Group presented their finding to President
Bush who was said to be elated at their findings. 9 months of deliberations
produced a two page bulleted report that outlined the following: Iraq is a
total disaster, the study group could find no clear cut way to fix this
dilemma. The study group also concluded that this situation was not “fixable”
at this time, and added that they would be open to suggestions from just about
anyone who wanted to submit them. So stymied was the Iraq Study Group that they
have since offered a $25 million dollar reward for anyone who can provide them
with some workable guidance and suggestions with what to do with Iraq. President Bush was so pleased with this
report that he said it “was a breath of fresh wind beneath the sails of a
ship coasting like the breeze” and added that he may even offer up a few
suggestions in order to garner that $25 million dollar reward.
In light of those grim study
group findings and lack of serious suggestions or alternatives, can General
Petraeus actually change the plight of Iraq or is this really a mission
that is impossible to fix? With leadership, or shall I say lack of leadership
like this Administration is nearly famous for, does the United States stand a
prayer of winning this ill-fated war in Iraq?
By the way, anyone interested in
submitting suggestions, hints, tips, or advice is encouraged to do so on 3 x 5
index cards and address them to: Iraq Study Group, c/o United States State
Institute for Peace, 1200 17th Street NW, Washington, DC 20036. Your
suggestions could be worth $25 million dollars--so act fast!
