Conservative philosophy is so logically untenable that it relies on lies and gross misrepresentation of facts to fuel its appeal. Radio talk show hosts cater to the knuckle-dragging, blubbering idiots whose opinions mirror the Archie Bunker school of thought. The reason liberal talk radio is rarely successful is because liberals aren't idiots who need their own beliefs regurgitated to them until they're assured they must be right. But conservatives have this never ending cycle of regurgitated lies and everyone knows if a lie is repeated often enough, it becomes the truth to some. Once in a while though, a lie is so blatant, so obviously false, that it crushes the credibility of conservative commentators, not that they really have any credibility to anyone with at least a modicum of intellect. Neal Boortz recently told such a lie.
A constant tactic among conservatives since Bush's appointment to the presidency in 2000 has been to shift the topic to Bill Clinton when the current president does something logically indefensible. This happened two weeks ago when Bush commutted Libby's sentence. Conservatives shouted how Clinton pardoned numerous criminals as if that had anything to do with this issue. But Boortz took it a step further, and even claimed that Clinton was convicted of perjury--the same crime Libby was truly convicted of. He repeated this lie three times and when a caller disputed this rather obvious falsehood Boortz said, "we're talking about a criminal trial, sir. The verdict was guilty." Though Clinton did perjure himself, he was never convicted, indicted, or even charged in a criminal court as Boortz insisted. There is also not much of a comparison between his lie and Libby's lie. Clinton lied to cover up his personal sex life which was not the public's business. He didn't want to get in trouble with his wife. Libby's lies obstructed the investigation into the campaign to discredit a political enemy of the Bush administration. They outed an intelligent agent. Behind the lies were more lies, treasonous ones that led this country into an unnecessary war costing thousands of lives and billions of dollars. Smart people know which lie is worse, which lie matters. I emailed Boortz and confronted him with this lie. Despite a disclaimer that he no longer reads negative emails, an assistant answered. He wrote, "Bill Clinton PLEAD guilty which according to Black's Law Dictionary is tatamount to a conviction. You need to get your news from something other than media matters." His assistant needs to get a dictionary himself and learn how to spell tantamount. This defense of his lie is laughable lie--kind of like Cheney claiming he's not part of the executive branch. Clinton never plead guilty. He was acquitted by the Senate. He was disbarred, but disbarred is not a synonym for convicted. During the disbarment hearings, he never plead guilty to perjury. He kept insisting that technically he never lied. Remember his ridiculous debate over the meaning of the word, is. Clinton was found guilty of contempt in a civil trial which is a far cry from being convicted of perjury in a criminal trial. Neal Boortz is contemptible. He's referrred to Cynthia Mckinney as a "ghetto slut," a term about as bad as Imus's "nappy-headed ho's." He supports corporate polluters and attacks environmentalists. He even co-authorted a book endorsing the ultimate tax cut for the rich--the national sales tax. He's a modern day Sheriff of Nottingham. This national sales tax deserves a special debunking. Proponents claim it will tap into the supposedly massive underground economy and force waitresses and drug dealers to pay taxes. (I wonder why conservative talk show hosts are so fanatical about shaking down poor waitresses.) The national sales tax would never successfully tap the underground economy; in fact it would create a larger one as it did in the dozens of nations that already tried tax programs similar to this failed system. And I guarantee, drug dealers still aren't going to pay the government sales taxes on the drugs they sell. Only the richest 1% would benefit from a national sales tax, yet there are many working class chumps supporting it, reminding me of all the stupid southerners who fought the Civil War for the benefit of a few score plantation owners. They read a book written by a talk show host and an ultra-rich, ultra-conservative congressman, and they think they know it all. In reality they're so stupid they can't understand why the supposed 23% tax rate would actually be a 30% embedded tax. (See www.factcheck.org) They're so stupid they don't understand a fundamental miscalculation in the rate: When proponents of the sales tax calculated estimated revenue, they based it on what prices would be without deducting the embedded taxes that they would supposedly eliminate by ending income taxes and payroll taxes, but when determining the 23% rate they did figure the elimination of those said taxes. Any logical person knows it can't be both ways. Proponents of the sales tax admit the tax would be horrendously regressive so they are stupid enough to think universal rebates would solve this problem. Rebates make this system unrealistic. Giving rebates to people to make up for the taxes they pay equals zero revenue. It would end up as a luxury tax that wouldn't bring in any revenue. Overall, it's a ridiculously unfair idea based on fundamental lies and purposeful miscalculations. Neal Boortz--your pants are on fire.
