A woman went to a priest to prepare a funeral for her blind and mentally infirmed son. You see, her child fell into a deep coma in the hospital. He is in this sad state due to a terrible accident. The only way she knows he is alive is by watching the monitors he is hooked up to. She just wants to prepare for his possible death. The priest told the woman that since her son did not become a member of the parish, and didn't give regularly to the collection basket, she would have to pay one-thousand dollars for the priest to come and give the man a funeral. This appalled the woman and her family. The man is an innocent in the eyes of god, and the woman has been a good Catholic her entire life. She raised all seven of her children in the parish. So why would the priest not give her son his funeral? This question perplexes the family. The man, because of his limited mental capabilities, has the mind of a five year old. His blindness and mental condition makes him not cognizant of the church in the first place. But does he not deserve a funeral? If the priest was running a business, it is understandable the he would charge for this service. Then, the government should be able to tax the parish. The parish is tax exempt, however, and donations for services are also expected. To demand money from the woman, who is living off of her dead husband's pension and a small amount of Social Security, is just a priest robbing the old and infirmed in order to enrich the church. What is your opinion? How can the church deny this man a funeral just because he could not put money in the collection basket every Sunday? How can the priest discriminate against the blind and mentally infirmed?
The priest is obligated to the funeral for the man when he
passes away. That is the right thing for the priest to
do.
