There Is An Inlet, Darlin’

By Brian Michael Barbeito
July 11, 2007

There is an inlet, darlin’, on an island somewhere, and if you look at it from above, you’d understand in a flash, that that is where we would catch our souls. See, it cups around the water, that sandy shore, like some kind of horseshoe. God made it that way, not nature only, as if nature is enough, like the non-believers say. That is God’s place, so wild and calm and divine. The water is clear, so clear you blink, because you think it must be a mistake, as you’ve not seen anything that clear. Some patches underneath make it look green in places, and some patches turn it blue, but those names don’t do justice honey. You would need more names of colors to begin to evoke that kind of place, like teal and aquamarine. Anyway, it is apart from the world. You’d have some meter, some inner device that would click on, something deep in the spirit, that would make you hesitate before even putting a towel down there, so pure and unbridled it is. But you could do it. It would allow it. Far, so far out, a ship would pass, as if in a dream. Oh the dream ships, and maybe there are sweethearts on dream ships, or old knowing captains that have seen it all. Maybe there are deckhands with scars and stories to tell. Surely mermaids follow there, and strange sea creatures of the dawn and dusk. Behind you as you sit or walk the inlet's infinite grains of sand are hills that go up forever. Flowers and trees grow there, and there are colors that are greener than green, redder than red, and that show you yellow that not even Van Gogh would understand. Spry monkeys lurk and laugh. Undiscovered species of ants traverse and work. So many guardians, guides, devas, phantoms, spirits, spectres, and all out cool angels roam smiling singing sighing in delight. In that place, you wonder how you ever lived before, how you ever endured. In that place you soar. You feel like your spirit is continually lifting out of your body, yet you remain on the earth and that is the mystery of it. One look and you’d know. There is an inlet, darlin’.
