I went to this movie last night and had an enjoyable evening. The movie reminded me of the older cartoons that I liked to watch after school in the Eighties. If a person reading this is thinking of going, I do recommend this picture. Now, for my But... Yup, I sure do have one this time. I am surprised that the civil rights leaders of this country have not seen this in the Transformer Movie. I did not like a couple of the political statements snuck into this film. It ruined what I would call a family experience. The first problem I had was the Latin American soldier trying to express his culture to his unit, by speaking in his native tongue. He clearly did not understand that his unit did not speak Spanish. Yes, it is his culture, and if he was trying to teach his language, I would better understand this character choice. But he was not trying to teach the men Spanish. This just reinforced the idea that Latinos
are dumb, which is certainly not a fair assumption to make. There are many legal immigrants from Second, why blow up an African American's hard-earned business? To get the African-American to lower the price of the vehicle, Bumble Bee, to the Caucasian father? I believe the KKK will be proud to see an African American humbled in this manner, losing several thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. Bernie Mac should have never taken the part of the used car salesman. He did the part no real justice. I watched the scene literally squirming in my seat. I felt dirty watching that explosion, and I knew it would cost a lot to fix those cars, that probably only sell between the prices of $1500 to $5000. The man's business was ruined! It is hard enough in this country to even obtain the American Dream of owning a business. Al Sharpton has not weighed in on this outrage. Why? Is he an investor in the movie, perhaps? And why would producer Steven Spielberg let such right-wing prejudice enter a wholesome action picture like this? I don't have answers to these questions. I think the picture would have been better and funnier, if a slick Caucasian car salesman, complete with cowboy hat, had lost the thousands of dollars of poorly maintained, no-warranty merchandise. I also think it would have been better, if the Latino was portrayed as a teacher of his culture, not an idiot. I did enjoy the movie, as I stated in the beginning. And please do go, if you like, but keep
in mind that subtle politics can be found in the strangest of places.
