Kucinich For President
By Michelle Malsbury
July 6, 2007
There are many quality democratic candidates running for the
office of President of the United
States in 2008. Top contenders for the Democratic
nomination for president have pretty well been ruled by Senator Hillary Clinton
(D-NY), Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), and Senator John Edwards (D-SC), but what
about the little known candidate Dennis
Kucinich (D-OH)?
Dennis Kucinich has been outspoken on defunding the war in
Iraq, guaranteeing healthcare coverage for ALL Americans, cancelling trade
agreements that have only served to delete jobs in America, repealing federal
laws that permit the government to intervene in union activities, repealing the
Patriot Act, eliminating for profit healthcare insurance providers, for profit healthcare
providers, and for profit pharmaceutical corporations. Dennis Kucinich has also spoken often and
at length about the necessity to impeach President Bush and Vice-President
Cheney for the lies and manipulations of material facts that helped them to
invade Iraq.
I agree with his platform and
applaud his efforts on behalf of the American public.
In 2002 Dennis Kucinich presented a full analysis before
congress regarding what an invasion of Iraq
might mean for the United
States. Dennis Kucinich was especially interested
in how the lack of information/evidence that was used by the Bush
Administration might come back to bite them in the end. Dennis Kucinich did such a good job
supporting his arguments that 125 democrats voted against the Iraq War
Resolution, but Bush invaded anyway and has stuck to his various lies as
evidence to why that was necessary.
Since then Dennis Kucinich has outlined a 12 point plan to
end American occupation in Iraq
(HR 1234). This plan was devised
after consulting the United Nations advisors on the specifics of international
peace keeping and security, as well as, consulting with military experts and
principals in the international community. Dennis Kucinich’s plan makes
provisions for closing the United States
bases, bringing the troops home, and helping Iraq to stabilize, rebuild, and begin
anew.
Phase one of the 12 point plan deals with the closing of United States bases in Iraq, ending our occupation there,
and withdrawing. Phase two outlines
the use of existing funds to bring troops and equipment home. Monies specifically appropriated in
October of 2006 to the tune of a $70 million dollar bridge fund can make this a
reality without adding more funding. Phase three lets the people of Iraq
determine who and how they want to rebuild and gives them the ability to
monitor and reorganize their reconstruction without American companies like
Halliburton running over them. Case
in point here is that after the first Gulf War Iraq
restored electric in their entire country within a three month time period yet
four years after America
invaded in 2003 there is still no water or reliable electric despite the avalanche
of funding from the United
States specifically allocated for this. Phase four involves the international
community in the overall stabilization of Iraq
and places America
in the background. This shift of
power would take the imperialist position that America has held since Bush began
this war out of the mixture, replacing it with a dialogue that inspires
cooperation and a sense of community. The remainder of Dennis Kucinich’s
plan reveals a step by step process for creation of greater stabilization and
cooperation in that entire region. For more information about Dennis
