By Patrick Hurley July 4, 2007 Independence Day extends to UK, too! On the occasion of our nation's birthday we are all reminded of the freedoms we enjoy in this country. I would not want to live anywhere else. I have visited exotic foreign lands such as Vancouver and Tijuana and I have always come home with an appreciation for people who don't say, "eh" at the end of every sentence and for the bacteria-free water that keeps my inner system from imploding. Love it or not, the United States of America is the greatest country on earth. I am proud to be one of its citizens. The freedom to write and express oneself is part of that joy. In a lot of other countries, a forum such as UK could not exist. The state would never have allowed it to establish itself. Matt and Steve would have been locked up and probably executed for their freedom of speech in literary form. Which leads me to a reminder for all the writers in here... Useless Knowledge is a blog that is owned and operated by an Editor and the people he hires to run it. It is not the domain or the right of any writer to control it or run it. It is a privilege to write in here, not a right. By that I am not implying it is a wonderful privilege; I am stating it is a place where you, as an author, are allowed to express your views on any particular subject. If you do not like the way your piece is edited, do not appreciate other authors, do not approve of other opinions or essays and cannot respect the editors, you have the same option you experienced when you first came in here: the ability to write here or someplace else. It is fruitless to argue a foundational truth that is not your domain to argue. That truism is thus: "He who invents the blog makes the RULES!" The editor is not asking any of you to like all his rules, tactics, hirings or opinions; he is telling you that this is his blog and he will control every capitalized word, comma, jot, title and headline. Your job as a writer is to submit your work. You are also allowed to rebut other people's work. That is the end of your job. The rest is up to Matt and Steve. Period. End of debate. It is really very simple. You write in here or you don't. But, if you do, focus on what you have been given the freedom to do and do it as well as you can. Write your heart out and don't worry about other writers, all the rules you chafe at and the editorial machinations that rile you. Just be a good writer. That is the spirit of Useless Knowledge. Please keep that in mind should you decide to stay and contribute to this forum. You have an option to show the world how articulate you are or to gripe and moan about the editors, the editing and the other authors. It is a decision you have to live with if you stay or go. It is YOUR choice. After all, this is America. Have a nice Fourth of July. ------------ About the author: Patrick Hurley has won three Emmy awards for writing, hosting and producing television shows.
